Fire Sprinkler Systems Are Becoming Common in Most Homes

Businesses have been incorporating fire sprinkler systems in their buildings for quite a long time. They have been using them, in tandem with alarm systems, because they are able to suppress the flames rather then just warning the occupants of their existence and the imminent danger. They have proven to be extremely effective in protecting people. These systems have gained a lot in popularity, especially with home builders and buyers recently, and are also being installed alongside smoke alarms.

It does not take long for a seemingly small spark to develop into flames that can engulf a room or a building. The fact that a fire department is located very close does not mean they can respond quickly enough to stop the flames spreading. This is the kind of situation where a well maintained system can save lives and property. It will be able to slow down the progress of the flames until they arrive. The buildings that benefit most from these systems are high rises.

If a system has been properly maintained, it will use the water supply within the building to discharge water in order to douse the flames. A system like this cannot be seen as a replacement for an extinguisher or the fire department, but as a way of giving occupants more time to flee the area. There are four main types of sprinkler system. The wet and dry pipe systems use sprinkler heads to soak the flames and surrounding areas, the deluge system pours a vast quantity of water on a specific point, and the preactive system is highly localized.

The heads of a wet pipe system are connected directly to the water supply. When they are activated by heat they will automatically discharge water. The effect of this is to douse the flames, giving the occupants the opportunity to evacuate.

A dry system makes use of automatic sprinklers, but these are connected to a pipe that contains pressurized air or nitrogen. When the nitrogen or air is released it allows the water pressure to release a valve, subsequently letting it flow through the piping system and out through the head. This type of system is often installed in areas where temperatures often go below freezing point.

A deluge system is also connected directly to pipes with a water supply. A fire detection system located alongside the head is used to operate the supply valve. This kind of system discharges large quantities of water in order to douse fast developing fires.

The preactive system is also activated by a separate detection device. Difference being that even when the problem has been detected the heads remain closed. What happens is that water is allowed to flow to the head, but has to wait for a separate activation. This happens when elements within the individual heads are activated by heat, and then the water is discharged. This means that each of the heads works individually, therefore a whole floor of the building is not sprayed with water when the problem is localized to one or two desks.

It is not uncommon to find that buildings have numerous devices in place, such as fire sprinkler systems, extinguishers and alarms. Working in unison they dramatically reduce any effects that a fire can cause. However, of greater importance, they increase the chances of the occupants survival.
