Five Bits of Advice For a Sane Work-At-Home-Mom Experience
When you\’ve got kids, getting to work from home is the answer to your prayers. Sick days no longer drive you into a flurry of panic. You\’re not dead meat if you\’re running a little late in the morning. Your head stays firmly above water when you have to work a little overtime since you can just do it after the kids have gone to bed for the night. Overall, it\’s a pretty sweet deal.
Then reality sets in as usual. In the summer when the kids are out of school and insist on doing things with you, working from home becomes an obstacle. No longer can you drop the little darlings off at the sitter while you go about your work. You are called upon constantly to fill sippy cups, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and changing cartoon channels. You are also the designated driver to take them to the park, Chuck E Cheese and the Fun Zone. These things are not conducive to concentrating on one\’s work.
You think you can work after the little darlings have gone to bed for the night? Think again. By their bedtime, once you have done the dishes and straightened up the house a bit, you are dog tired and ready for bed yourself. It\’s enough to drive a sane mom nuts. To save your sanity, I offer the five following pieces of advice.
1) Get up earlier than the kids and read and respond to emails. Don\’t do this again until lunch time. Email eats up your time. Hopefully you can turn yourself into a morning person if you aren\’t already, as early morning is the best time to update your social media sites, do your emailing and knock off a few things before the kids are up and all hell breaks loose.
2) Do breakfast with your kids and take a break at the same time. The main problem with working while kids are about is the attention they demand. They are unable to concentrate on anything for very long making it utterly impossible for you to concentrate on your work. By taking time off to be with your kids and play with them then go back to work for a couple of hours, then the kid break, and so forth throughout the day will strike a nice balance between your work, your kids and you. Your kids won\’t be whining that you never spend time with them and you can find some time for uninterrupted work.
3) Never rule out calling in a babysitter when you have deadlines fast approaching. Hiring a babysitter to watch your kids while you are at home may seem counterproductive, but if you are feeling a time crunch and the little brats won\’t leave you alone no matter what, it\’s time to hire one. Even better, send them off to a little friends for a play day. I\’ll bet you have friends with kids that would love to swap baby sitting duties with you. If you don\’t, go find some.
4) If you are lucky enough to afford time off for a vacation, leave your lap top at home. You will have to work many months before you feel you can take a family vacation, but when you can, make it a real vacation and leave all your work home. This is the time for fun with your family and some much needed R and R for all of you. The kids will be delighted that at long last they have your undivided attention, will resent your work less and it will give everybody a breather before the next inevitable onslaught of the work day routine.
5) Keep established work hours. Most kids thrive on a schedule. If you can tell them you\’ll be done with work by this specific time, then stick to it, they\’ll be more willing to entertain themselves until you\’re done, making working from home a more enjoyable experience for both of you-and opening the door to continued work-at-home success. Isn\’t that what you were going for in the first place?
