Getting Better Gas Mileage From Your Truck Or Car
In these days of ultra high gas and fuel charges and costs at the pumps each time a motorist or automobile owner goes to fill up their tank they are reminded of the current costly nature of running a vehicle for transportation. The question abounds – how can I increase fuel efficiency; get more distance that is miles per gallon from my precious gasoline fill up? True there are some things that can be done to improve rankings. Some driving factors are beyond our control In addition some options and creature comforts which we hold dear all have a cost when it comes to fuel efficiency and consumption as we drive down the road or highway. Yet to the greatest degree it all depends on our driving choices, patterns and habits.
While it is a truism that fuel consumption is dependent on the type of driving being employed – both in terms of condition, climate, driving speeds and styles and road conditions most auto owners know when their performance or mpg gas mileage is out of whack on the low or lower end of the scale. Just the average time between fill ups can be the tip off or serve as a warning flag.
Two basic rules of thumb though in reference to fuel economy rankings and results that professional automotive engineers will state are that first – a car equipped with an automatic transmission will generally get about one more mile per gallon than a comparatively equipped car with a conventional manual transmission. Yet interestingly enough if the vehicle is driven generally in town and at speeds less than 30 miles per hour (50 km/h_) the manual shift setup will have a slight advantage overall. Secondly although we take power steering in 2011 as being standard factory equipment on cars and trucks there is a performance hit. At low speeds power steering takes a toll of approximately one mile per gallon rating whereas at 80 miles an hour the loss is only estimated to be one-quarter-mile per gallon.
Air conditioning definitely takes a toll. At 20 miles per hour it is about two and one half miles per gallon involved. Yet this drops to an estimated value of one mile per gallon at speeds over 70 mph.
Lastly it is important to work into the miles per gallon mix that overall maximum fuel economies are not reached until the engine has reached it full operating temperature. In summer time this may be only seven or eight miles in duration whereas in the northern climes or Canada in the dead of winter in may simply never occur in frigid minus zero (potentially even minus 40 degrees extremes) so that overall winter driving may yield horrendously low fuel efficiency results. Often its said by winter driver up north – it takes forever to warm up the car\’s motor and generally you use twice as much gas in cold winter driving as in the summer or even falls seasons.
Lastly no matter how far we drive, how we drive and how old our vehicles are. They should all be maintained in top mechanical shape overall. From time to time we should have our vehicle inspected and as well professionally checked to see if the auto requires a tune up.
