Getting Consumers to Notice Your Product Or Service May Require Promotional Items
Some would argue that human behavior is reasonably predictable; others say clearly not. In general, one can fairly say we have some common responses. One of them is the universal appreciation for gifts, which is why promotional items virtually guarantee someone will take notice.
Our society believes it is improper to give an official something to influence them. We have laws prohibiting the offer or acceptance of things over a certain value. At the same time, we provide our waiter tips, commonly understood to mean; to insure proper/prompt service.
Our government has crafted laws against bribery, yet we accept the existence of lobbyists. For the citizens there seems no difference, lavish trips, meals and gifts meant to curry favor. The government, for its part, crafts elaborate rules for how these gifts must be handled, a tacit understanding that it is simply the way things are done.
Other countries do not engage in such self delusion, and openly accept that if you want something done, you should expect to give something for it. Doing business in China, for example, is not possible until after the business men have come to know one another. This involves taking meals and engaging in other social events before getting down to business, all of which are expenses for the individual or company seeking an opportunity.
The reason for all of this is because we understand the influencing power of gifts, even for those who already have plenty. The actors and actresses who attend the academy awards as nominees are usually not in need of material things, yet this last year saw each receive a $75,000 dollar gift bag. The reason for the gift is clear, it is hoped they will wear or use the product, an advertising coup of incredible value to the product line.
Without the seemingly underhanded practice of giving something to get something, there is another purpose for providing things without expense. A sample of a product is a very effective advertising tool, since the entire point to advertising is to influence consumers to try the product. When a sample of a cereal comes to the doorstep with the newspaper, it is likely someone in the household will eat it: success.
Another purpose of providing limited use samples or small portions of a consumable is blatantly to play on the natural desire to get something for free. If you want to get people to come over to your booth amongst a sea of booths and at least see what you have to offer; give something away. What you provide need not have anything to do with your product, you may sell software, but a really attractive paperweight will attract people.
People are curious by nature, and they have a keen interest in things that are new, unusual or attractively packaged. Marketing personnel are experts at using these traits to influence behavior. There is nothing wrong with using this instinct to your advantage, and if you are giving away promotional items, having their attention is fair remuneration.
