Getting to Know an Organic Mattress More
The name alone tells you that an organic mattress is a product which uses only natural materials. It’s something without chemicals like fire retardants, pesticides, etc. Consumers who are going green usually go for this product. But other than helping save the environment, it also has numerous benefits compared to counterparts out of synthetic materials.
Materials commonly used as stuffing are wool and cotton. Something which contains wool tends to have a steeper price tag compared to one which uses cotton. But many people don’t mind the cost, especially those who are susceptible to allergies and with respiratory problems. That’s because wool is known to be a naturally dust mite repellant.
Your average mattresses contain chemicals because of the way they’re manufactured. The truth is many of the dyes, adhesives, pesticides and other materials used in their manufacturing can be detrimental to one’s health. In time, they can combine with dust and become even more toxic. Just imagine what impact it has on the health when inhaled.
Wool has natural fire retarding properties so the use of synthetic fire retardants is eliminated. Such benefit is enhanced further when the material is wrapped using natural latex. That’s because natural latex is resistant to mold and mildew. Because its manufacturing doesn’t involve the use of chemicals, it’s hypoallergenic. However, the combination of wool and natural latex makes the product carry an expensive price tag.
For someone who’s on a budget, going for something which uses cotton is also fine. This material allows for a comfortable feeling so you can enjoy quality sleep each time. Cotton is capable of absorbing moisture in the air and on the body, and this can be an advantage during times when humidity causes you to have a hard time getting to sleep. It also has insulating abilities so it’s going to keep you comfortable as you sleep, whether it’s summer or winter.
But there’s a downside to cotton: it’s capable of combusting. Using fire retardant on the material isn’t a good idea because it’s going to defeat the whole point of going green. The product needs to steer clear of anything that’s not natural.
Speaking of which, you have to be sure that every material used is all natural. Some manufacturers may advertise their products as being made from natural materials, but chemicals may have been used in making them. It’s therefore important that the manufacturer states just how much of the products they have can be considered as all natural.
Many other products are made which can go well with this type of mattress. It’s not unlikely for you to see linens, pillows and many others for use in the bedroom that are also made from natural materials. Using them together is a great way to maintain a healthy home environment, especially for family members who are prone to allergies or who have respiratory problems.
However, an organic mattress also has a few shortcomings. As mentioned earlier, it usually carries a more expensive price tag compared to a typical rival. Many have observed that the stuffing used can get packed down after some time, thereby losing the product’s firmness easily. Many have also noted a strange odor coming from it, especially when still new. Some even reported to have suffered from a headache after smelling it.
