Growing Sub Prime Hybrid Motorists
The well known, highly publicized, and in the end, laughable government subsidy for the car industry is long gone. That won’t stop the automotive industry complaining about it. Their bread and butter of the new age, the hybrid and full electric vehicles, are not being swiped off the showroom floor at what they consider to be an acceptable rate of growth. So of course, they complain at the lack of government subsidies to give people the incentive to do what is morally right, helping the environment by way of lining the industries pockets with gold.
There are still many incentives for purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle. In New York you get the privilege of driving in the HOV lane with only you in the car. All you have to do is register for a little tag that attaches conspicuously to your rear bumper and your free to roam in the carpool lane that has eluded you for all of these years, if that is what you are into of course.
The sad part about it is, the incentives are for new vehicles. New high priced vehicles that are out of many American’s price range. There is no reason that Uncle Sam should come in and absorb part of the cost. That is the auto maker’s responsibility to get the car into the consumers house. Why do you think cars don’t end up like the concept did? It’s too expensive.
Auto makers need to find a way to reduce the cost to truly start a wave of green vehicles. After all, higher income families traditionally have newer cars, that get better gas mileage anyway. A sale to someone who already has a hybrid isn’t helping the environment any.
The vehicles that came from the ages of shoulder pads and neon lights are the ones that need to come off the road. Ones that have gas mileage in the single digits and the fist set of teens. The people driving those can’t always afford to spend ten times what their current car is worth to get something that gets better gas mileage. Even with incentives, it still puts the car into an unreachable price range.
Electric cars are also not even an option for low income households who typically do not own their own home and are renters. Electric charging stations are few and far between. Good luck finding an apartment building in a low income neighborhood that offers a full electric car charging station for their residents.
If the auto industry really wants to convert the country to green, the cheapest car available needs to be electric or hybrid. Otherwise those people who can only afford the bare minimum, are going to be driving the car they are sold today, which is not hybrid or electric, and they will be in that car for the next 20 years.
Eventually the auto industry will reach that point, where you do not have to choose between mother nature and what you can really afford. Until then, the growing sub prime market is breaking away from the overpriced electric cars and pulling us back down the path of gas guzzlers.
