History Of N Scale Model Train
N Scale model trains are popular modeled railways and trains due to their durability and accuracy in design. The scale ranges vary from 1:148 to 1:160, depending on which manufacturer modeled the train. These N scale model trains were introduced in the early part of 1960s. Perhaps the K. Arnold & Company are the ones who started out releasing commercial N scale model trains. However, during the 1940s and 1950s several companies had already started developing smaller train scales but it was the K. Arnold & Company who set a general scale and drove the standardization of the sizes of scaled model trains. The Rapido coupler was the design that set a standard on what scale modeled trains should follow. The Rapido design was also allowed to be used by other manufacturers which led to the popularization of N scale model trains.
Factors That Can Be Attributed To The N Scale’s Popularity
Although the N scale model trains are popular and a lot of enthusiasts purchase them, these model trains are only second to HO scale trains. But still, N scale models are popular due to a number of reasons. One thing is that, they are smaller compared to other train models, which make them relatively portable. For example in Japan, space at home is limited, and so, due to the N scale’s size, most people prefer to purchase it. Other hobbyists also purchase these scales because these trains are usually plain. Hobbyists can then use them to build more complex trains which are aesthetically superb.
N scale model has even become popular in Australia recently due to the growing availability of local prototypes in Australia. Australian modelers were limited in the past on choosing among American, British, and European prototypes, but today, prototype N scale model trains are already available. This made N scale models a trending type of scale model trains in Australia.
N Scale Model Trains’ Importance On Modern Layouts
N scale trains and accessories are also widely used nowadays with HO models due to their ability to create an illusion in the models that a hobbyist makes. N scale trains are smaller compared to HO models and this is the reason why they create an illusion that objects are further away with each other compared to how far they are actually. N scale models are put strategically on the background to create this forced illusion in the perspective of the viewer. This creates a bonus depth to the overall model.
Most Popular N scale Project
One of the most popular, if not the most popular is the N scale model built by Gordon Odegard in 1978. He named his work the Clinchfield and it is noteworthy due to its modular design. This 6 by 13 feet model is made of aluminum and Styrofoam to reduce its overall weight. This design acquired so many appreciations and it has been displayed on numerous exhibits.
N scale models are not the smallest but they are one of the most popular scales. Since 1960s, the N scale model trains has provided countless satisfaction to several hobbyists. This scale is expected to continually grow in popularity in the next years.
