How Nursing Homes Work for the Elderly
Nursing homes are institutions that care for individuals who do not need the services of a hospital yet cannot be left at their residences. At these facilities, home health aides and nurses provide round the clock care to these individuals who are usually elderly. The baby boomer population is slowly retiring and this has resulted in demand for all types of long term care. The reason that these facilities exist is to provide supervision, personal care to geriatrics and to enable them to be independent even in their old age.
Most family members would like to take care of their loved ones but are not able due to their own commitments. It is imperative therefore for the elderly person\’s family to choose the appropriate assisted living residence that will take care of their loved one. These services can be provided close to hospitals in order to make it easy for the occupants of the home to go for care easily.
At these facilities, the individuals receive three meals a day that are balanced, round the clock supervision, help with taking a bath, dressing and management of their prescription medicine. They are also guided on exercise and wellness programs and for those with diseases such as arthritis or Alzheimer\’s, extra care is provided to the geriatrics.
Many states require that the assisted facility be registered and licensed to operate before taking in customers. The department of health services is responsible for issuance of licenses that can be used by these facilities. Operating an institution that is not recognized by the government is a federal offence that can see the facility being closed for good and for the management party to be imprisoned.
In the United States, all assisted living residences must be registered, licensed or certified by an appropriate department or agency of the state that has a process for issuance of initial licenses and for renewing existing licenses. When the elderly first goes to the facility, a service plan is developed in order to meet the individual\’s specific needs. The geriatric individual is usually assessed physically and psychologically.
The family of the senior individual together with the community are urged to help in ensuring that the service plan being implemented is followed through. A coordinator from the facility is designated to oversee the plan and is involved in creating, developing and assessing on its progress. The resident of the facility or their loved one gets a copy of the plan upon requesting.
The cost associated with assisted living vary depending on the size of the rooms, other amenities that are being offered and the location of the establishment. There are public facilities which are owned by the government as well as private ones that depend on donations from well wishers. It is important for the elderly person\’s family to understand the origination of the facility so they can have a different plan if donations stop flowing in or if the government decides to shut down the assisted living home.
Nursing homes have proved to be relevant institutions especially now that most of America is aging and will need these facilities. Nurses and other health care professionals have positive job outlooks in the future if they choose to work in these assisted living homes. The demand for these individuals to fill these homes will mean increased salaries and wages.
