How to Be a Successful Gym Instructor
So you are hitting the gym regularly for some time now and have gotten yourself into excellent health and a superb body shape. Good for you. Then have you ever thought of becoming a successful gym instructor as a career?
Although there are differences in the titles \”gym instructor\” and \”personal trainer\”, people often use it interchangeably regarding them as the same as someone who trains people to be physically fit. We shall do the same in this article.
So if you are keen to become a successful gym instructor, here are some things you must consider in order to be successful.
As a start, you must have a good working knowledge of fitness coaching and nutrition. Although you may use your own experience of working out in the gym, that is not enough as you will be coaching people from all walks of life, people with different body types and goals that are very different from yours. Furthermore, how much do you know about nutrition, human biology and physiology?
So it is highly recommended that you take up a formal physical education course and get yourself certified as a qualified gym instructor. A qualified certificate will also be a very powerful endorsement that you are a professional personal trainer and should a client ask to see your qualification, it will come in rather handy. Your clients pay you to get the results they want and only through educating yourself can you guide them to achieve their objectives.
How are your social skills? Do you get along with people? Social skills are important in maintaining good rapport with your clients.
You see, as far as your clients are concerned, you are not just their gym instructor per se but are also their mentor, confidante and a friend. So if your communication and social skills are not up to the mark, you will stand to lose some clients and the problem will even compound since should word spread, you may end up with no clients at all. You don’t want that, don’t you? So brush up your social skills if you are weak in that area.
On the positive side, if you are knowledgeable and able to communicate your knowledge efficiently to get the desired results for your clients, you will be a very successful gym instructor because your happy clients will provide you with many useful referrals. When you deliver good results for your clients, they will tell their friends about it and recommending them to you.
Although there is no doubt that you need to maintain your authority as an instructor, you must be patient. I have witnessed many instances when a trainee came out with her own workout or nutrition plan and their instructors simply casually brushed it off as being unworkable.
No doubt that you may have more knowledge than your trainee in this field, there is no reason to hurt their ego. After all your clients are paying you for your services and as such they are your de facto bosses. So be patient.
If you include what we have discussed in this article together with a good marketing effort, you will most likely have a very successful gym instructor career.
