How to Choose Which Gym to Join
With christmas a new year fast approaching you are no doubt thinking of some resolutions to help you get into good habits for the coming year. Christmas is the time of indulgence for many and for just that reason it is understandable that many people decide to treat themselves to a gym membership for the new year – but what should you look for when joining one?
Your local geography will be key in choosing which gym you are going to sign up to. If your chosen gym is even a little bit out of your way then it will just improve the chances that you won’t bother going. A quick internet search will tell you which gyms are closest and which ones will fit into your daily routine. You will be surprised at how easy it will be to avoid going if it isn\’t somewhere you pass every day.
It may not seem like an obvious idea to you but you should ask your friends whether they belong to a gym. Ask them for some honest recommendations – it may be the case that they can\’t stand their gym and will suggest that you sign up for another local one. On the other hand, if theirs is a reputable one then you may even be able to partner up if your schedules allow it.
Another crucial aspect to take into consideration is the cost of membership. It is likely that whatever gym you sign up to will ask that you pay for a yearly membership so do check that the monthly payments fit into your budget. If you know someone else who is looking to join then ask if there are discounts for referrals.
It should be a no-brainer that you should take a tour of any potential gym that you are considering joining. Don\’t be afraid to ask questions so that you can find out how it will fit into your lifestyle. When is it busiest? Are there classes offered? Are the machines usually taken up? Is there somewhere safe where you can store your valuables?
Take a good look at the equipment which is being used. Check to see whether any of them are being repaired and whether there are a good variety of machines for you to use. You may also find that there are gym TV screens you can watch whilst you are exercising, which may make your time there more enjoyable and relaxing.
Try to get an idea of how friendly the staff is as they will be the ones helping you out in classes or training sessions when you eventually join up. Are they keen to help you? Do they seem knowledgeable and enthusiastic? Take a moment to find out whether they offer sessions with a personal trainer.
At the end of the day, it is a reasonable investment to join up with a gym so make a point of checking to see whether there is a refund policy. Some gyms will have specific policies when it comes to refunds so make sure that you are covered if you find that you have made a mistake with your choice.
