How to Stay Active Despite Being Overweight?

Being overweight or obese is a medical condition in which there is accumulation of excess fat in the body leading to various ailments and health hazards. Currently, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults around the world with America topping the list. Obesity is not just confined to adults; an increasing number of children are also falling prey to this ailment. Approximately 42 million children under the age of 5 years are estimated to be overweight.

Major reasons for obesity

Overweight people have a higher risk of suffering from multiple health risks. Hypertension, diabetes, breathing disorders, heart diseases, lethargy and loss of energy are some of the ailments associated with being overweight. An overweight person finds it difficult to perform even his routine chores. Zero or negligible physical activity, binging on junk food, irregular sleeping habits and stress are some of the major reasons which lead to obesity. Addiction to the television and the computer and irregular eating habits are primarily responsible for overweight children.

Getting back in shape

Overweight people may find it very difficult to get into any exercise regime. This is because their body may not be able to support any physical activity. Hurdles that they could face are breathlessness, body pain and loss of stamina among others. However, with determination and motivation, this may not seem impossible. You can begin with a simple routine. Walking has proven to be one of the best techniques to lose weight. A short 20 or 30 minute walk daily will get you into a rhythm and as your weight begins to come down, you will be able to do more. Also keep a watch on your eating habits.

Do away with the junk food and replace it with healthier options. Exercise and good eating habits go hand in hand in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you have friends going to the gymnasium or a swimming pool it would be a good idea to join them as exercising is more fun in groups. If you find walking or gymming too monotonous, you may want to join a dance class. Dancing is a fun way to losing weight and will also keep you motivated.

Other options

Another very beneficial, but intense way of losing weight is a fitness boot camp. It is essentially an outdoor physical training camp that involves rigorous, military styled strength enhancing activities. Most of the times, ex-servicemen run these programs and they encourage you to give your 100%. As the class progresses, the difficulty level of the exercises at the boot camp is increased, thereby pushing you to put in that extra effort.

Benefits of a healthy lifestyle

Only if your body is fit will your mind be able to think positive. Physical activity helps increase your metabolic rate which in turn results in weight loss. Bringing down that excess weight and excess flab will boost your self-confidence. Your clothes will fit better and you will like the way you look. But most important of all it will help reduce the risk associated with various life threatening ailments.
