The other main choice is soft contact lenses. Soft contacts are more comfortable to wear for most people, but hard contacts are more durable and tend to provide you with clearer vision.

If you have chosen to use hard contact lenses, it is wise to follow thorough instructions for use to keep the contacts and your eyes in top shape. Since hard contacts often have comfort issues, it’s wise to maintain them properly to give yourself every opportunity for the highest degree of comfort. For optimum results, clean your rigid contact lenses as soon as you remove them from your eyes at the end of the day. You must also store your hard contact lenses in the contact solution recommended by the manufacturer while you sleep so they remain moist. When you wake up in the morning, all you have to do is rinse the solution off the contacts with saline solution and then apply a wetting solution before you insert them.

Once a week, it’s a good idea to use a contact lens enzymatic cleaner to prevent deposits from forming on the surface of the contact lenses. If deposits become ingrained on the lens, you won’t be able to get them off. First, drop the enzymatic cleaner tablet in saline solution in vials. When you set it up, the cleaner will be fizzing, which is when you should set the contacts into the vials. Your kit will recommend a desired time to leave the contacts in the solution, which will generally be between two and twelve hours. Once the contact lenses have finished soaking in the enzyme bath, you must clean them as you normally would with your everyday contact lens cleaner. After that, store your contacts in your normal soaking solution to disinfect them before you insert them into your eyes again. Once the process has finished, be sure to rinse out the enzyme cups well with saline solution, then leave them somewhere to air dry.

If for some reason you aren’t going to wear your contact lenses for at least one week, it’s best to store them dry and go through the cleaning process just before you’re going to wear them again. Also, don’t wear your rigid contact lenses for long periods of time right away if you haven’t worn them for a period of time. Cut the time in half on the first day, then gradually increase your wearing time by a couple of hours per day. And as with any type of contact lens, try to observe proper hygiene at all times by using the cleaning solutions when necessary and keeping your nails short and clean.

Follow the same removal guidelines as with soft contact lenses, and always remain calm if you have any trouble getting them out. A drop or two of rewetting solution in your eye will usually help a rigid contact lens float just enough to get it out easily.
