Many companies try to save money by keeping certain functionalities in house. They will stop outsourcing their marketing efforts, put the kibash on outside consulting, and try to manage their own IT services. This is not always the best idea.

Unless your company is large enough to allocate an entire section of the budge to the IT department, including staffing, management, consulting, and actual equipment, managing your own IT can be disastrous, resulting in lost data, corrupted files, and a huge dip in productivity. In a word, mismanaged IT can destroy your business.

Most companies depend heavily on their computers and servers. In fact, most businesses have automated operations that are totally dependent on the company’s computers, servers, and data storage. Unless there is room at your company’s location for appropriately sized servers and backup servers that are in a climate-controlled, moisture-proof room of their own, with the staff to take care of them, you will likely need to outsource your servers and your data storage to a company that is fully equipped to take care of your needs.

Additionally, an IT staff can be extremely costly. You have to hire people who are qualified to the job, and because of the previous tech boom, salary expectations are likely higher than you want to pay. Often times, an IT professional with experience taking care of the servers and doing back-end type of work might not be all that familiar with the day-to-day problems a company can have regarding the computers. Because of this, when hiring an IT staff, you have to think about hiring help desk personnel who can troubleshoot and solve computer problems.

Storing your data somewhere is one problem – if you choose to outsource that you have some insurance that your data is stored safely and responsibly. If you outsource your IT staff, you will save on high salaries and the cost of benefits, vacation time, and the other added expenses that come with hiring on full time employees. Just do your research and make sure your choice is a dependable one.

Another thing to consider is having an outside company come and do your disaster recovery plan. When there are a lot of variables involved in the day-to-day operations of your company, often it is good to hire a professional company to plan what your employees should do in case of a natural disaster or man-made disaster. In this day and age that includes cyber attacks which might destroy all electronic files from schedules to payroll. This professional can formulate a business continuity plan that can be shared with the employees of the company and updated regularly to include changes made in the organization.

The bottom line is that your data, equipment, and processes are likely what drives your company. If you cannot afford the best in support full-time at your facility, it is best to hire a company that can perform your IT services for you, so that you know that your data, employee information, and company procedures and processes are safe.
