LCD Vs LED Monitor: Which is Better
If you are about to buy a new computer monitor you may well come across the LCD vs LED monitor debate when researching your options. Being aware of the arguments each side puts forward can help you in your purchasing decision. Once you have this awareness, you can then decide which type is best for you.
First, it helps to clarify what each means. LCD stands for liquid crystal display, and works as follows. When light is exposed to liquid crystal (which cannot itself produce light) that light can be changed and transmitted depending on the type of wave used. In a monitor, the liquid crystals are contained within two sections of glass and change their alignment when they are inside the liquid.
Because liquid crystal does not produce light by itself, it requires another light source for the light waves it can use for display. LCD only monitors will use fluorescent light for this purpose. Those that use light emitting diodes are referred to as LED monitors.
This is the crucial fact that must be understood. LED monitors are LCD monitors too. In fact, many people prefer to call them LCD-LED monitors as the two technologies are present. The key difference between them is in how their screen display is lit, and the choice that any consumer is really making is a choice between fluorescent lighting and LED lighting.
As to which of these types of lighting is better, that depends on a number of factors. Three areas that most consumers will look to are picture quality, power consumption and price. So we shall examine both LCD and LED monitors on how they address these three areas.
With regard to picture quality, it has to be said that the LED monitors are much better. The light emitting diodes can produce a much sharper picture and color contrast than the fluorescent lights can. Dark black shades and clear white shades are notably different on each screen in this respect.
With regard to power consumption, given that personal computers (PCs) can be used all day long either at home or at work, it is understandable that the monitor which consumes less power to run is the more preferable option. The LED capacitors are more powerful than a fluorescent light, and thereby require less energy to function. So, once again, the LED advocates have the edge.
With regard to price, LCD monitors are cheaper on retail than their LED counterparts. However, LED monitors are cheaper long term. Given that they will consume less power than the LCD devices will, it would be best to overlook the short term price difference.
As stated above, LED monitors essentially are LCD monitors with LED lighting as opposed to fluorescent lighting. So it seems as though the LCD vs LED monitor debate is a little overblown. And given that LED lighting is both more productive and less expensive than fluorescent lighting, which is the key difference between the two, the conclusion can only be that the argument seems to favor the LED side overall.
