Lee Iaccoca & The History Of The Chrysler Dodge Minivans

Many people who are “car guys” or perhaps truck people might well think that the docile station wagon of our days – that is the Dodge Chrysler series of minivans , which went on to inspire a whole genre of vehicles and indeed a truck subclass , was first a foremost a Dodge or Chrysler invented auto class. Interestingly enough for automobile history and design purists not so. The whole project was started at the Ford Motor Company when Mr. Lee Iaccoca was a major auto executive at Ford. Ford was actually quite an innovative American auto manufacturer and producer at the time proud of its ideas and ranked early on with the slogan “At Ford Quality is Job 1”. The Ford designers and research team had determined that a good market for a new family vehicle existed and could be filed with a suitable product. One of the major findings of their research is that since women (whereas it was previously a men’s only job) were shuttling kids around in the second vehicle. The vehicle had to be low enough for women to easily enter and exit the vehicle. At that time almost all domestic American made products were exclusively rear wheel drive. Rear wheel drive vehicles with their need for a chassis with a rear drive train would be higher off the ground making it not easy for women to enter and come out of the vehicle. Hence a front wheel design for the niche automotive product was part of the essential mix. Ford forgoes the project at the time. It was Lee Iaccoca, when he left Ford and joined Chrysler at the helm. Timing was just perfect. Chrysler, the parent company of Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler divisions was in dire financial straights. They were not only willing to take the chance but also with the downsizing of vehicles for weight now were also designing an economy front wheel drive car series – which came to become known as “K Cars”. Voila Mr. Iaccoca worked out. Place the Dodge / Chrysler min-van on a K- Car chassis and you know had the first series of the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyageur in 1983. Today the product is established and firmly entrenched in the automotive marketplace with the high luxury end being known as the “Chrysler Town & Country”.
