Florida A&M Sets Season High in Scoring Versus Savannah State

Florida A&M routed Savannah State 47-7 last Saturday night and improves to 2-2 in conference play. The win comes a week after squandering a 21-0 halftime lead against Howard to lose 29-28.

The Rattlers (4-3, 2-2 MEAC) dominated Savannah State with a methodical offense and big play runs including a 60-yard scamper by Al-Terek McBurse to give FAMU a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Damien Fleming then scored on a 19-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 28-0 at halftime.

Savannah State (1-6, 1-3) had no answers on offense against FAMU in the first half. All four drives ended in two three-and-outs and two turnovers (fumble, interception in end zone).

The Tigers’ only success on offense was a six play, 83-yard drive, capped by a 38-yard touchdown run by Sheldon Barnes. FAMU answered on its first possession with a 31-yard touchdown run by McBurse, increasing the lead to 27 (34-7) midway through the third quarter.

FAMU padded its commanding lead in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns, including one with 52 seconds left in the game en route to the 40-point win.

McBurse had a breakout game with 218 yards rushing on 14 carries and three touchdowns. Fleming passed for 83 yards with one touchdown and a rushing touchdown for FAMU.

The 47 points scored by the Rattlers was the highest for the season and have now won three of its last four games.

Savannah State had more penalties (11) than points (seven) in the contest. They also committed four turnovers and were held to three for 11 on third down conversions.

Justin Babb rushed for 117 yards for the Tigers.

Bethune-Cookman Beats FVSU, Snaps Two Game Skid

Bethune-Cookman beat Division II Fort Valley State 58-30 last Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a two game losing streak for Wildcats.

The first half was an offensive shootout as both teams scored a combined 57 points.

BCU led 34-17 in the second quarter before FVSU scored on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Cameron Pearson to cut the deficit to 34-23. The Wildcats led by the same score at halftime.

BCU scored the only points in the third quarter on a 20 yard touchdown run by Isidore Jackson. The Wildcats led 41-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

FVSU’s only score in the second half came on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Pearson. The Wildcats now led 48-30 midway through the final period.

Bethune-Cookman scored the final 10 points to put the game out of reach which secured the 28-point victory.

BCU (3-3) racked up 648 yards of offense, including 418 on the ground. FVSU had 422 yards of offense, 321 of that through the air.

Jackson rushed for 150 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. David Blackwell passed for 222 yards on eight completions for the Wildcats.

Pearson had 321 yards passing and four touchdowns for FVSU (1-6).

Inept Offense, Turnovers Doom Howard

Howard lost to Georgetown from the Patriot League 21-3 last Saturday afternoon in a battle between two Washington, D.C. area schools.

Georgetown (5-2) scored the only points of the first half on a six yard touchdown run by Nick Campanella. The Hoyas led 7-0 at halftime.

Parker Munoz scored the only points in the game for Howard with a 29-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-3 in the third quarter.

The Hoyas scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a four yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Kempf to lead 21-3, putting the game out of reach for Howard.

Brandon Drayton had 48 yards receiving on five catches for Howard (3-4).
