Mobile Phones as it Access Terminals
At first mobile devices simply had the basic functions of phone messages and text messages. Gradually, color screens and cameras were added. In 2004 came out the first UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) bringing the possibility of video conferencing. In 2005, there were phones capable of playing mp3s. Also, operating systems and internet connections were highlighted in the Blackberry, from the company Research in Motion. Thus, many users have begun to understand the mobile as an extension of their PC while on the go, which has led to two developments: more focus on mobile entertainment whose main feature is multimedia capability, and more focus on the productivity of the mobile, that has resulted in their having qwerty keyboards, and being optimized for use of e-mail.
Of all the terminals, the mobile phone is one of the most dynamic in terms of its evolution. The fierce competition among manufacturers for a continuously growing market has led to the launch of many new products annually, along with a reduction in life cycles with a consequent risk for companies of sometimes depreciating their investments.
The economic crisis which has ravaged many economies has also caused resentment in the mobile sector; in the 4th quarter of 2008 it recorded a fall of 12% in sales. In 2007, GPS was incorporated in mobile phones; by 2008 some 40% of the phones sold in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East & Africa) had integrated GPS, according to Canalys.
At present, we are experiencing a process of convergence upon mobile devices, which is making them the sum of the operating system (smartphones) and the PDA, with wireless. The most famous device is the iPhone 3G, which marks a turning point in that it changed the user’s experience in terms of mobile navigation. In addition, the iPhone is itself a new concept in terminals. Its system includes the iPhone AppStore, a centralized application store from which one can buy applications designed specifically for the device that take full advantage of its technology, as well as its touch interface, Multi-Touch; GPS; 3d graphics, and live stereo audio. By mid 2008 there were thousands of products that can customize these terminals. It is also possible to enjoy the use of web applications that facilitate access and utilize services available on the internet, such as Facebook. In addition the Mobile Me service from Apple allows all users to receive emails automatically to mobile when connecting with a computer, but also to update and synchronise emails, contacts and calendars.
According to M:metrics (USA) iPhone is the most popular mobile device to access the news, with a rate of 85% of iPhone users in January 2008. This data reflects a degree of acceptance for these services that is completely unusual so far, which is also reflected in the degree of usage for other services: 30.9 % of iPhone users watched television on their mobile, 49.7% had had access to mobile devices in the past month, and services such as YouTube and GoogleMaps were very popular, with 30.4 % and 36 % respectively.
