Nurse Scrubs: A History

As of these days, most of medical professionals can be identified because they wear medical scrubs as their uniform. This is also true in movies as well as TV shows. Actors and actresses portraying the role as medical practitioners wear a type of scrub for some reasons. The fact is that, majority of hospitals today require all of their staff, from doctors and nurses to other employees, to wear the said uniform as they work. The popularity of the clothes became wide that it was set to be one of the standard dresses in hospitals. Yet, the material hasn’t been known to all, except for surgeons, until the 90s.

Almost every individual are familiar with the typical type of dress which a nurse is required to wear before. They are assigned to wear the traditional clothing sort which includes a cap, a skirt, and a short-sleeved top. It is just recent that nurses are allowed to wear scrubs as their uniform. Even surgeons, which are the ones known to wear scrubs, don’t wear such clothing before. They do surgical procedures wearing the typical clothes they are used to wearing on a daily basis. The practice changed though because many eventually saw that it is hard to clean their shirts after it is stained by bodily fluids. So, the use of aprons has been discovered. It was before that a doctor’s clothes which is blood-stained is not that of a problem but a sign that an operation is successful and that the practitioner have many patients. Yet as time pass by, this practice started to change.

Keeping a person aware from risks of infection as well as to keep their environment away from germs at all cost is known to all surgeons. So, it has been decided that they wear antiseptic gowns when working in order to give solution to the problem. At first, the gowns are all white. The realization of it not a good thing to be used during surgeries then made practitioners change the color instead. Thus, lab gowns became green. This has been the preference because it can easily blend the colors from bodily fluids and can also reduce the strain white color can give to the eyes.

Today, scrubs are not just the typical green. Since it is not only the surgeons that are making use of such clothing, manufacturers see to it that customers are provided with an array of choices. Hospitals nowadays assigned a certain style of scrub for every department in order for them to be identified from one another. Styles are also changed after some time. For this reason, one can still work in the hospital and wear scrubs without compromising his or her sense of fashion.

Overtime, it can be seen that the form of clothing medical practitioners usually wear evolved. This is because of they desire to work more efficiently and effectively while experiencing comfort and convenience with the clothes they wear. Scrubs are really one of the types of clothing which is really beneficial, especially for those working in hospitals.
