Off the Beaten Path Travel Destinations

There are many unusual destinations that are worth your exploration when you have an extra week of vacation. Some of our favorites are below.

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

This lovely city is on the southwestern shores of Uruguay. It is a very popular detour from the bustling Buenos Aires. You can get to this town by the ferry that goes across the Rio de la Plata. This attraction will amaze you with its very old stone homes, wonderful restaurants with patios on the riverside and many boutiques selling all sorts of crafts.

You can visit the La Vigna, where you can discover the wonders of organic farming, shearing sheep and other rural activities of Uruguay. You also can simply take it easy in the main house. It is an estate that was built in the late 19th century by Italian winemakers. There are five rooms that are filled with antiques and ceramics.

The Puerto Camacho marina is wonderful, and the promenade includes a fantastic chapel with stone walls. The restaurant here is called Basta Pedro and is great. The marina also has a racetrack and you can take your lessons from experts.

Tozeur, Tunisia

This area has stunning luxury hotels and glamorous events. There is a film festival, an art fair, an F1 race, and much more. Many people feel that Tozeur is the new jewel of North Africa, and has replaced Marrakesh, Morocco for that title. Tozeur is a small, quiet and more remote city. There are only a few tourist hotels here for now. The city is set in an oasis of date palm trees. This was a Roman outpost and a caravan hub. It has plenty of Saharan culture, including souks and plenty of desert animals that will impress you. There is an annual Oasis festival of traditional music and also dance. This area has made cameo appearances in some Star Wars movies, due to its dunes and a nearby dried up lake.

Iraqi Kurdistan

You may not think that this would be a place to visit, but in reality this part of Iraq is safe and tourists are generally welcome. Tour groups such as Geographic Expeditions does a 21 day tour to Eastern Turkey and Kurdistan. You will spend about half of your time in Kurdistan on the Hamilton Road. This road hooks up gorges. The other part of the trip is dedicated to the Anatolia part of Turkey.

Another group called Distant Horizons takes groups of tourists to Kurdistan two times per year.

The US State Dept tells Americans to stay out of Iraq, but the British consulate has said that Kurdistan is an exception to the rule. Terrorism and violence incidents are much lower in this part of the country.

If you visit here, you also can take a look at major landmarks that include Erbil’s citadel. This dates all the way back to the Assyrian empire.

There is no shortage of amazing sites in these unusual destinations, and you should check them out on your next vacation!
