Portable Audio and Video Players as it Access Terminals

Since 2005, the portable player maerket has been in a renewal process with regard to devices that are capable of playing MP3 and MP4. All other forms of audio, and analog devices (radio) are in clear decline. However, the process of renewal is linked to the convergence of several functions in one device, such as mobile phones that often incorporate audio functions like Mp3 player or radio.

Game Consoles as Information Technology Access Terminals

In 2007, there was an explosion in the sales of console hardware in the world. The new PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 renewed the outlook for consoles, offering users an taste of the “new generation”. In January 2009, Wii got third place in usage among consoles. Much of the success of the Wii console is based on an innovative approach to the concept of games that involves the players’ physical movements controlling the game in which he or she participates. Another important aspect is the fact that it was able to spawn a gaming community that can benefit from various Wii features such as the Wii Fit game that encourages players to exercise while they play. It has also managed to attract prestigious and influential people from the media such as Stephen Spielberg, who was initiated into the world of video games with the Bloom Blox game for this console. It has also consolidated its supremacy in the gaming field, where of the five best-selling video games in the world as of May 2008, four of them were formatted for the Wii. New consoles have also emerged for older customers, with a more finished look and better technical characteristics, such as the Sony PSP console, with an excellent screen, that even allows for playback of music, as well as featuring a great design.

More than 200 million video game consoles were sold in Europe in 2008, growing 18% compared to 2007. The console also has a wide range of capabilities including on-line convergence devices – mainly multimedia options, such as playing DVDs or listening to MP3 music.

Services and Applications as a component of Information Technology

Information Technology is being conditioned by the development of content, services, and applications, and of ways for accessing them. Moreover, as users adapt to the spread of broadband, there have been some changes to the services.

Given the initial technological limitations (128 kbps of bandwidth), the first services were focused on the dissemination of static information, aside from tools for this new and unique technology such as email, and later on, search engines.

Soon companies and organizations were scrambling to use Information Technology as a new channel for distribution of their products and services by providing customers with ubiquitous access. There appeared a second set of Information Technology services such as electronic commerce, online banking, access to information content and entertainment, not to mention access to the public.

These are services with a model of supplier-customer sophistication that is fairly deep in terms of technological possibilities, and of the evolution of the forms of providing the services.
