Social Impact of IT
Before modern Information Technology, and in particular the Internet, made it possible to concentrate vast amounts of information through a single outlet, the major sources of iinformation for centuries were those that are still familiar ones even now: teachers, parents, and books. Knowledge was concentrated at Universities and colleges, as it continues to be; however the dramatically increased levels access to information possible now have meant the breaking down of barriers to knowledge for many. The main problem though is the quality of the information that is accessible. In addition, the capability of producing slick propaganda calculated to play on and potentially permutate the natural emotions and instincts of audiences has expanded manifold. Internet technology has also streamlined the interface between people, and expedited the conduct of business. One can make deals or close sales in different cities in the world, or engage in transactions anywhere, with a single click. Even politicians have their own blogs and YouTube videos, making it completely obvious that Information Technology in the last 40 years, and especially the last 10, has changed every aspect of life.
In some sense, the new technologies are immaterial, since the main subject remains information; but now it can be accompanied with more sights and sounds than before. New information technology involves the development of new codes and languages, and the specialisation of content on the basis of the audience. Those who long for a far off culture can be rewarded with a sort of immersion that completely flies against former historical processes of assimilation, in which immigrants tended to slowly forget customs and societal nuances of their distant homes.
The concept of Information Technology has two features typical of novel ideas: First, it is frequently invoked in contemporary debates, and second, the definition of its semantics remains obscure, and closed to the Information Society. The advent of the Internet and especially the Web as a medium of mass communication, and the success of blogs, wiki technology, and peer to peer downloading, has lent a social dimension to Information Technology. Ayache Gerard in “The Great Confusion” speaks of “hyperinformation” to emphasize the anthropological impact of new technologies. Many users consider the Internet in terms of a technological relationship.
Information technology encompasses all the resources necessary to handle the information, particularly computers, software, and networks, and to make it, store it, manage it, transmit it, and find it. Current Information Technology can be categorized broadly according to its three component features: the networks, the terminals, and the services.
Firstly, the different networks of access available today can be further analyzed as Fixed Telephony, Broadband, Mobile Telephony, Television Networks, and Home Networks. Secondly, the terminals, the points of public access, which include the Personal Computer; the Internet Browser, the Operating System, and Microprocessors for computers; Mobile Phones, Television sets, Portable audio and video players, and Game consoles.
Thirdly, the services and applications can be subdivided into Email; Search Engines; Online Banking; Music and audio; TV shows and film; electronic commerce; electronic government including a variety of public services to the citizen; e-health, or electronic health services; Education; Video games; and Mobile phone service. There is additionally a newer generation of services subcategories that includes peer-to peer downloading, blogs, and virtual communities such as Facebook and Twitter.
Each of these areas of the modern day technological scene are subjects that can be expanded upon at greater length, and much of the field of Internet Technologies is devoted to doing so.
