Staying Healthy While Traveling

Stress is at the root of most ailments, so always plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to check in. You will be more likely to chose quick, less healthy foods if you’re in a hurry. If you have a fear of flying or are prone to motion sickness, eat light the day of your trip, request a window seat, order a ginger ale, and take medication if necessary. Ginger lozenges are terrific for nausea and are warming and soothing, too.

Always drink lots of water. Staying hydrated helps your body eliminate toxins and helps stave off cravings for sugary snacks. Whenever possible, keep your circulation going on long flights by standing and walking through the plane’s cabin. Leaving legroom for yourself, rather than trying to shove bulky luggage under the seat in front of you is also helpful. Also, resist the urge to order cocktails on your flight. The high altitude causes your body to feel the effects of alcohol twofold, so that’s double the dehydration and double the hangover. Try mellowing out with a crossword puzzle instead. If jet lag is a concern, try to get some exercise as soon as you reach your destination. You’ll be amazed at how a nice, brisk walk can revive a tired body.

Airport terminals and train stations can be a veritable petri dish, and the recycled air in a plane’s cabin can circulate germs from one sick passenger to the entire aircraft. Consider getting a flu shot before you leave. Prevent sickness during your trip by washing your hands often, using hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable, cleaning surfaces with sanitary wipes before you use them, saying “no thanks” to airline blankets and pillows, and taking an immune-boosting supplement.

If you’re leaving the country, take care of your digestive system by drinking only bottled water or water that has been boiled or treated with iodine. Also peel fresh fruits and veggies before eating them. If you’re worried about the food making you sick, try and avoid ordering raw foods and items prone to spoilage and undercooking. Once again, it may be tempting to sample the wine and beer selection, but take it easy. Overindulging in alcohol may be fun at the time, but a hangover can ruin an entire day of vacation. The same goes for too much rich food. Eating sensibly and getting lots of fresh air and exercise will keep you healthy, energetic, and stress-free. Also, see the section on packing light. Staying rested and hydrated is the best thing you can do for your health at home, or abroad.
