Stonehenge England a Tourist Destination

Stonehenge is one of the great wonders of Europe if not the world. It is to be found some 85 miles south west of London in the county of Wiltshire on the exposed Salisbury Plain. For any visitor to England it is a place that must be seen.

It doesn\’t create an initial impact, in fact it almost looks like a few pillars remaining from a bombed building. In terms of size, they look very small until you stand close to them and see how massive it is You also appreciate the stones are not random at all but carefully arranged.

Weekends are best avoided when visiting Stonehenge. Whatever you do don\’t try to visit at the summer solstice because it is more crowded then than at any other time. Stonehenge is best visited at first light or last light because you will avoid most of the crowds at these times.

Stonehenge is without doubt one of the world’s great mysteries. It has puzzled people now for centuries.| The fact is we still don\’t know today much about these stones.

Who built Stonehenge is the question everyone wants answered. The answers are as crazy as King Arthur, to visitors from outer space. The fact is that no-one really knows the answer.

When it comes down to it, what we are seeing is a collection of very carefully placed stones. The stones at Stonehenge are of course not randomly fallen but very careful placed and organised. The stones have actually lain there probably for over 4000 years.

It\’s very very likely therefore that the layout of the rocks was a deliberate decision. The chances are the sun was involved probably for some kind of ceremony or ritual. Guesswork must play a large part here as there is no written evidence available.

What we can safely deduce is that the two massive stones with another laid across their top must have taken hundreds of men to get them there. Where the stones came from is another unanswered question although Wales seems the most likely. How amazing is that, when you consider the distance, the weight and the equipment they can have had available. The old theory of the Druids being the prime movers in the Stonehenge project has been disproved because they weren\’t around when the stones were quarried and dragged. A inconvenient fact like this hasn\’t made any difference to the Druids at all and they still claim they own Stonehenge. The fact is that Stonehenge is over a thousand years older than the Druids.

The research that has been done about how Stonehenge was built is absolutely fascinating. It seems likely it was built in three distinct stages. In fact two of the stages were never completed.

It is aligned incredibly using astronomy, mathematics and engineering. When you consider nowhere in Europe was there a society advanced enough for this kind of undertaking at that time.

Learned scientists have come to the conclusion that somehow or other Stonehenge was used in some way as a solar or lunar calendar. Most people who visit Stonehenge are quite simply in awe. Perhaps a little shiver down the spine when you consider the history. Go if you can as dawn breaks, and if you are lucky there is a slight ground mist below the sun, and the ghostly shapes of Stonehenge could move you to tears.
