Termite Protection in the Winter Months
It is that time of the year again…fall. Many homeowners will turn their attention towards raking leaves, cleaning gutters, putting fertilizer on the grass, stocking up on salt and making sure they have a decent snow shovel to get ready for the winter. It is also an important time to be thinking about pest control since the cold weather can be a great time to completely eradicate most household pests.
Eradication is a strong word. It means to complete remove. The cold weather is one of the biggest assistants in the battle against many household pests. Think of the common fly in your backyard. During the summer months they are a constant challenge, showing up and disturbing your every barbecue and softball event that you can schedule. Once the cold weather comes around they are gone for good except when they get into your home. The pests that get into your home can live for varying lengths of time but if you can get rid of them inside of your house, you will have a comfortable fall and winter season without worrying about pests.
Termites are different than other types of pests and require year round maintenance to keep them in check. Termites have the ability to go deeper into the ground to escape the harsh winter climates of the northern US. They wait for a break in the weather in the spring of next year before they begin to swarm again. In all but the very southern climates the country the danger of a termite swarm is not that great during the winter months of January and February. If you live in the middle or southern states, however, termite control and maintenance needs to be a year round effort. Seasonal temperature swings can allow termites to stay active during the winter months.
The use of a professional termite inspection service or, if you are on a maintenance plan, a regular monthly check-in by your termite and pest control professional can help you to be sure that the bugs are kept in check throughout the season. The professionals get very busy in geographic areas around the country once termite start to swarm so it is best to already have a program in place to be sure that there is a barrier of protection already established. This barrier is your front line defense from a termite attack and can some in the form of either chemical applications or in-ground bait systems. In certain highly active areas of the country many pest control professionals use both methods (chemicals and bait systems) to remove termites that are showing visible signs of creating damage to a home. The combination of these treatments allows for a quick response to the immediate issue and a longer, more effective approach to colony elimination through the use of the in ground bait system.
With termite damage being one of the most expensive forms of damage that pests can do to your home, it is wise to seek out the help of a professional to be sure that your property is safely and completely covered.
