The Expanding Role of IT
Use of Information technology has continued to grow and expand, especially in the developed nations, at the risk of deepening the global so called ‘digital divide’, as well as generational social divides. Internet technology is in fact starting to play a growing role in human life and the functioning of societies in a staggering array of diverse areas – from precision agriculture and forest management, through monitoring the environment on a global scale, biodiversity, participatory democracy, access to commerce, telemedicine, encyclopedic information, managing multiple databases, the stock market, robotic applications, and military uses, as well as help for the disabled. So vast is the role of internet technology in the modern world, that some even fear a loss of individual freedom, including complaints of ‘Big Brother’, growing intrusiveness of unwaned advertizing, etc. Others believe the current state of Internet Technology should not only continue to expand unabated, but become the paradigm of all future civilization.
At present, it is no longer considered a surprising thing to be informed of remote events minute by minute, to communicate instantly with people on the other side of the world, to watch a video, or to collaborate on a team without all members being in one place. With speeds previously unthought of, Information and Communication Technologies are transforming everything. This concept, sometimes also called the Information Society, is mainly indebted to the invention of the Internet, which had its beginnings four decades ago. It was originally conceived as part of the ARPANET – Advanced Research Projects Agency Network – created by the US Department of Defense, designed to communicate with different agencies in the country. The basic principles were intended to be a decentralised network with multiple paths between two points, and messages to be divided into different parts that would be sent along different paths.
The role of various universities and institutes in researching and developing the project, later known as USENET, allowed for more opportunities to exchange information. E-mail addresses were created, and instant messaging was eventually developed. But it was not until the mid 1990s that the Internet really exploded, with the ability to offer a ‘world wide web’ consisting of ‘web pages’ that could be viewed with improved ‘windows’ computer technology. Unlike USENET Newsgroup messages that had mostly been a mere exchange of words and debate, and something like an open secret among a growing number of mostly college crowds, web pages were now capable of presenting information accompanied with colorful imagery, even sound, with semi-permanent homes that could be linked to one another in indefinite combinations, and also presented as related mini webs within the web, in other words, a website. Today the ubiquity of the web is such that it is practically taken for granted, while USENET has become a hollowed out relic of the past, all but overlooked by whole generations, though perhaps fondly recalled by old timers.
The way the internet has developed means that massive amounts of information are now available in many places; whole libraries of books on highly technical or rare subjects can be found and read without difficulty from any good connection, when not so long ago, these titles were only available in a few select university libraries. The ease with which one may publish one’s own material has proceeded at a commensurate pace.
