The Importance of Getting a Reference
Suddenly the world has been turned on its head. Where once there was plentiful money and plentiful jobs, there are now slim pickings for all involved. It seems like the entire globe has been dragged under the rising waters of financial insolvency, and it is becoming ever harder to escape as job opportunities are more scarce. Businesses big and small alike are finding themselves more and more conservative, and so the importance of a good reference has never been larger than it is today.
References are personal recommendations from former colleagues to potential new employers. They vouch for a person\’s ability, skill and dependability. Because the person writing the positive note is putting their reputation on the line, they are held in high regard.
After all, if a new employee to a company fails to live up to expectations, it is not only the employee who is sullied. The reputation of the writer of a glowing report on him or her is also tarnished. For that reason, people do not write these affirmations for work very readily.
There are two types of references available to people looking for jobs. Personal ones can come from a respected member of the community or family friend who has a high position in a university, for example. They can write that they have known a person for most of their life and believe them to be earnest and hard working. The candidate is therefore trading on the reputation of the person writing their supporting letter.
The other type of supporting letter is a purely professional one. This comes from a former employer, who notes how well a person worked at their previous job. It will often highlight the abilities they demonstrated or learned during their time there.
By and large, this will be constructed of many different stock phrases. They will invariably note a person\’s ability to work as a team, and highlight their communications skills. In many ways, a professional letter of support is much more standard than a personal one.
Employers look through professional letters to see more what is missed out than what is contained. There are several tick boxes which need to be checked in the course of such a document. Personal recommendations are much more open to highlight people\’s best skills as an individual.
These references will be included in a packet which most employers demand of potential candidates. It will be housed alongside their resume, or curriculum vitae, which outlines their working and educational history. It is the reference which sways the mind of employers more than anything else, because it gives them a valuable insight into the worker as a person.
A reference is therefore vital for those who want to be able to find meaningful work in this world. For many people, however, it seems to be viewed as an optional extra which can or cannot be added on the whim of the candidate. Invariably, those people who think this way are those who have yet to secure gainful employment.
