The Proper Way To Insert Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a daily part of the lives of many people who require corrective lenses to see clearly. Contacts remove the need for glasses and the annoyances that some people associate with glasses, but they aren’t completely without their own concerns. It is important that you insert your contact lenses properly each day so you can see clearly and help you avoid eye infections and irritation.

Getting the contacts on your eyes properly begins right when you take them out of the case. Check to make sure the contact lenses aren’t inverted or inside out before you even attempt to put them in. An inverted contact lens won’t cause any damage to your eye, but your comfort level will decrease and you may not see as clearly. To determine if your contacts are how they should be, you can use the bowl method or the taco method. For the bowl method, position the contact lens on the pad of your index finger and look at the edges. If the edges are pointing up and the lens looks like a bowl, it is right. For the taco method, set the contact lens on your index and gently squeeze it closed against your finger, using your opposite thumb. A lens that is upright will fold over like a taco and the edges of the lens won’t flare out to the sides.

To properly insert soft contact lenses, first wash your hands well and dry them on a lint-free towel. Stand or sit in directly in front of a mirror in a well-lit area so you can see what you’re doing. Remove the right contact lens from the case and rinse it with solution to remove any debris. Perform your check to make sure it isn’t inside out, then, with the contact on your index finger, pull your lower eyelid down with your middle finger. Lift your upper eyelid by reaching over your head with your opposite hand and pulling the eyelid up gently. Look into the mirror and position the contact lens on the center of your eye. Look down slowly and then let go of your lower eyelid. Your contact lens should position itself on the center of your cornea. Release the upper lid and then close you eye. Press on your upper eyelid gently to remove any air bubbles that may have formed and repeat the process on the other eye.

For rigid gas permeable contacts, also known as hard contact lenses, the hand washing and solution rinsing process is the same as with soft contacts. This time, when the contact lens is on your right index finger and you’ve determined that it isn’t inside out, you must place one drop of rewetting or conditioning fluid into the center of the lens. Lean forward over a counter and look straight down into a mirror with both of your eyes wide open. Position the middle finger of your left hand on your upper right eyelid and hold your eyelashes against your eyebrow. Pull down on your lower lid with your right middle finger. Continue to look straight ahead into the mirror and set the contact lens into the center of your eye. Release the lower eyelid, then the upper lid and blink your eyes several times. Repeat the process on the other side, reversing your hands to make it easier.

It may take some time to get your system working efficiently for either soft or hard contact lenses, so it’s wise to be patient and keep trying until you can get them in there comfortably every time.
