There is No Faster Way to Say I Love You Than by Buying Roses
The notion of love and romance has occupied the poets and writers of the world since the beginning of time. There seems to be no end to the amount of time and energy mankind spends contemplating this basic human instinct, with continuous efforts to develop the best way to convey the thought. For men, when it comes to deciding what physical object best personifies the emotion buying roses is the automatic answer.
It is a seemingly innate knowledge that if one wants to indicate a form of affection, the physical embodiment of that emotion would be a flower. Perhaps because of their beauty or fragility, there is an unmistakable parallel with the feeling of a bonding couple. Greek Mythology has an explanation for the tie.
Greek myths speak of the Goddess of Flowers first called Chloris and later called Flora found the body of a beautiful nymph in the forest. She requested the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite to give her great beauty, and called upon Dionysus, the God of Wine, to bestow upon her a sweet scent. The three Graces gave her brightness, joy and charm, and finally she then cleared the skies so that the sun God, Apollo, could make it bloom.
The association between mankind and flowers is ancient, found in Egyptian tombs and Frescoes from 1500 BC. In the Buddhist tradition the lotus, with its roots in the mud, the stem growing through the water and the bloom in the air symbolizes life and love. The west is more pragmatic, the bloom beautiful, the thorns a reminder that often love hurts.
A slightly more pedestrian explanation of how this flower came to be associated as a symbol of love and romance occurred in Europe. During the Victorian age all things visual were revered, and the excitement over breeding and developing new forms of this beautiful flower expanded dramatically. Because this was also the time when the first printed Valentine cards appeared, the association of the bloom and love became permanent.
Regardless of the origin of the relationship of this flora and the complicated emotion of love, it seems fitting that this should be the choice. With a sturdy stem self protected with sharp thorns and culminating in a delicate arrangement of petals, it just feels right. It is as with two young lovers, their countenance brilliant and their passion for one another engendering a fierce mutual protection.
Today it would be easy to conclude that the whole Valentine concept is a sham. That it is nothing more than a commercial ploy to generate revenue in a month that otherwise has no day of celebration. But that though is destroyed every time a man presents one of these exquisitely crafted dark red flowers to the woman he loves.
Certainly the practice can be abused, in the sense that one individual could present the gift to many others. This still does not diminish the feeling of the giver or the receiver each and every time. For the foreseeable future, buying roses will remain a central and welcome natural way to communicate affection from boy to girl.
