Things to DO in Washington DC
If you have never toured Washington DC, you are in for quite a treat! Below are some of the top Washington DC tourist attractions and ideas.
Take a Tour of the National Monuments
Sure, everyone does this, but do they do it at night? That’s what we recommend. The very familiar sites of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Capitol look amazing at night, also in the moonlight. This is a great time to view them because there is a LOT less traffic and less crowds.
You also can take a bus tour in the early evening in the fall and winter, when it is dark. Definitely worth doing.
Take a Tour of the Three Houses of the US Government
You can walk around Capitol Hill, and get tickets to tour the inside of parts of the building. You also can tour the US Supreme Court building and learn more about the divisions of power in our democratic republic. You should keep in mind that you might need to schedule some tours in advance through your Congressperson.
Go On a Stroll Through Georgetown
Georgetown is a very exciting and interesting part of the city on the Potomac waterfront. It is a great place to get some shopping done and there are all sorts of restaurants lining the bustling streets. You can tour some of the historic sites of this area, go shop and then have a meal at one of the many ethnic restaurants.
Go for a Walk or Bike Ride on the C&O Canal
The District is very lucky to have a great park like this that allows you to go from the bustle of city life to the peace of nature so quickly. You can go with your entire family on a walk in this lovely park, and learn more about the C&O Canal. Other options include going for a kayak on the river. Highly recommended.
Take in a Show at the Kennedy Center
Some of the world’s top ballets, symphonies and other performances can be seen at the Kennedy Center. You should probably buy tickets in advance for all sorts of events, including the National Symphony.
Go to a Concert at Wolftrap
You can go for a concert at this great outdoor musical venue in Virginia. They have plenty of outdoor music concerts in summer, and they have indoor concerts the rest of the year. It’s only 20 minutes from the District.
Go for a Hike in Great Falls Park
A great idea is to take a picnic lunch with you and enjoy the great views of the river at this park, which is 800 acres in size. You can go hiking, kayaking, biking, rock climbing and horseback riding. It’s only 13 miles from DC.
As you can see, there are many great attractions in DC that you may not have known about. There is something here that every member of the family will love. And if you need more to do, there always are the many Smithsonian museums!
