Tourism Development in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a country worth watching. With the end of the war, Sri Lanka has become the most ideal and one of the safest tourism destinations on the planet and visitors from around the globe are coming to see the wonders of Sri Lanka. As obvious as it seems, tourism brings a large amount of foreign exchange to Sri Lanka. Therefore, the demand must be satisfied with a required amount of supply or the demand will shrink and die. In other words, to keep this flow of great income without drifting, there should be sufficient facilities and infrastructure development to meet the needs of the tourists without failure.
Sri Lanka tourism is mostly renowned for the beautiful coastline and the sandy beaches. The Eastern coast of Sri Lanka is home to a multiple tourist attraction such as Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, Trinkomalee and Kuchchawelli. With the liberation of theses areas after the war, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has launched the Eastern Province Region Development project in order to keep a steady development in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
The above project has proved to have worked with the success at Arugam Bay, a well known surfing destination at the south east coast of the Island. It had been completely swept away from the tsunami disaster in 2004 but had been completely reconstructed so well by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority or the SLTDA. In October 30th 2011, Arugam bay has succeeded in inviting 96 of the world’s leading surfers from 19 countries to a Pro Surfing contest. This was one of the greatest achievements Sri Lankan tourism has gained.
Recently, the largest tourism development project carried out by the SLTDA is the Kalpitiya Development project in the western coast line of Sri Lanka, 150km North from Colombo. The proposed special developments in the area are constructing a Domestic Air post at Uchchamunai, A golf course at the Dutch bay, A race course and a Cricket ground at Kalpitiya and finally an under water observation centre and amusement park at Kandakkuliya. The expected investment is 175 million US Dollars and an amount of 75 million has already been invested in constructing 75 luxury boutique chalets, floating restaurants and a helipad. This massive development league will provide complete infrastructure to the area and provide a large amount of direct and indirect employment opportunities for the locals.
In the line of development, investment holds a key position because if there were no funding, none of the development schemes have worked out. Identifying this need, the SLTDA has launched many projects to attract local and foreign investors. On such scheme is the Unit for National Investment for Tourism or the ‘UNIT’. The key objective of the UNIT is to generate an investment amount of 1 million US Dollars to tourism related development. The UNIT provides all the information an investor requires and provides information about the suitable investments. The most attractive function of the UNIT is, it releases the investor from waiting for authorization and approval. The UNIT coordinates within the necessary authorities and does the approvals on behalf of the investor. Hopefully this will attract a lot of investors to tourism development because the UNIT is there to do the hard part for them.
The newly stated peace in Sri Lanka has created a suitable environment to visit and invest freely and safely. Never before the country has found a better era to uplift the country’s foreign exchange income like this. It is better done than said that we should make the best of it.
