What Are Observatory Domes?

A dome looks like a conclave as in the upper half of a spherical object and is generally a fundamental feature of architectural design. And an observatory dome is a half spherical enclosure, which consists of the equipment to be used to observe either earthly or ethereal events or both. Notables of area of human endeavours that have observatory enclosure erected are in climatology, astronomy, geology, meteorology, oceanography and also volcanology.

Most of the time, there are usually delicate equipment like optical telescopes and computer systems that are kept inside an observatory with the sole aim of protecting them even while they are in use. The enclosure will have an opening or slit on the uppermost part of the sphere. The slit will have to be opened when the telescope is in use. Similarly, the same slit will be closed when the telescope is not in use.

And in this modern era, we have some observatory domes that already have some built in rotator which allows the housed instrument to be able to change position while being used to measure and observe an event. There are some that are built on top of the surface of earth to be used to measure the radio and visible light portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. These are called earth surface or ground-based lighthouses. Where the opening upper portion is completely removed during usage, this type of observatory is called roll all-roof observatory. Those lookout domes that house radio telescopes are usually roll all- roof types.

Most ground-based observatories are deployed where atmosphere is slender to reduce the effects of atmospheric turmoil. This type of area also makes the sightseeing clearer. And to prevent light pollution, they are usually located in remote area where dark skies and dry airs are obtainable and where the observatory could be setup at high elevations. Similarly, radio lookouts are located far from major urban areas of a community to prevent interference from electromagnetic spectrum of some mass media like television transmission, radio frequency transmission and a host of other electromagnetic devices that are available. For best position, radio observatories will need to be placed between valleys to shield them from various electromagnetic disturbances. The type of enclosure is used in radio astronomy to see space very close to the earth surfaces.

Beside ground based observatories, there are also elevated types. These types of lighthouse have their telescope instruments installed above the earth surface. This type of dome can also be categorized into airborne and space type observatories. While the airborne type place all the telescope and other instruments above the ground surface (mostly above the earth’s atmosphere), space types observatories have their telescopes and other equipment setup and deployed at the outer space. The mirador itself may be installed to be orbiting alongside the earth in the outer space and are used to observe those objects of astronomy that cannot be viewed by the ground or airborne barbicans. While the earth\’s atmosphere is cloudy to those ultraviolet radiation, gamma rays, x-rays, and infrared radiation, the space lookouts can observe and report on object of these characteristics with ease and no interference.

Space-based telescopes are free from effect of all forms of earth’s atmospheric interference and radiation and so their outputs are usually better than the earth surface types. They are however smaller in feature than the airborne type and are more expensive to deploy. Airborne on the other hand can have the telescopes and other instruments deployed more easily than the space type. The instruments can equally be repaired and be updated very quickly. This type of observatory dome is also not as expensive as the space type enclosures.
