There are a variety of tire shredders that are used in the reprocessing and disposal of tires. These machines cut tires into small pieces so they can be reprocessed and used in making other products. The demand for the machines has grown as the need for an alternative to placing tires in piles or in landfills has risen.

Most local municipalities no longer permit the piling of tires above ground or their disposal in landfills due to their impact on the environment. Tire piles create a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease carrying rodents and they are also a fire hazard. When disposed of in landfills, they tend to settle unevenly and rise to the surface damaging the landfill cover.

Recycled tires are used in industrial applications that require recycled rubber such as the manufacture of rubber sheets. The pieces can also be shredded small enough for use in mulch for landscaping, drain fill, asphalt, and even playgrounds. Another use for the rubber is Tire Derived Fuel, commonly known as TDF. This fuel is used mainly by cement, paper, and steel kilns. In order to be used as a TDF, the rubber chips must be a maximum of two inches in size.

Machines not designed specifically for shredding tires can be used but tend to pull the rubber and tear it apart exposing the steel. Lots of exposed steel in the pieces will make it unmarketable. For use in most of the products that use recycled rubber, the steel wire must be removed. Some are designed so that they can remove the steel from the tires before being shredded, but most do not have that capability.

Mobile machines are portable and can be taken to the customer and shred on site. These are compact and cannot handle a high volume of tires at one time. They are powered by gasoline engines or by generators, depending on the model being used.

Fixed machines are generally set up at plants or at processing facilities. Some of these machines can process up to 2500 tires per hour. The smallest pieces that can be obtained from one machine is two inches. Shear shredders are the most popular machines being used. They have a slow speed, a low torque, and two shafts of knives making them very efficient.

It is required that these machines have a reversal system for safety and to prevent problems with the input of tires. Some have an automatic reverse system built in. A pressure switch that senses the weight of the incoming load is set to a maximum load limit. When that limit is exceeded, the automatic reversal will engage. This action will automatically stop and reverse the blades. The tires being loaded into the machine will be repositioned by this move and the process will continue if the problem has been resolved.

Tire shredders require little maintenance other than the knives used for cutting the rubber. Some types can be removed and re-sharpened while others must be replaced. It is very expensive and time consuming to replace the cutting blades. These machines cost anywhere from one hundred thousand for a basic model up to several hundred thousand dollars for the industrial shredders.
