What to Consider For a Backyard Observatory Dome?
Building an observatory dome at the backyard or in a garden has so many advantages to the seasonal astronomers; the period of observing will be increased exponentially. Period of setting of the telescope will be reduced to the barest minimum. The usual temperature acclimation, resetting of the polar and azimuth of the telescope are completely out of the question. With the aid of backyard observatory dome, setting up of the telescope will be nothing, but just a click of few buttons and switches. Both the computer systems and other tools are ready to take tasks. Acclimation to the temperature is also instantaneous.
And during extraneous weather condition, there is that assurance that one can still observe without any fear of rainfall, wind storms or thundering since the dome can be closed within a few seconds of time. Even inside the dome, the telescope is protected from wind blow and thereby allowing more precise tracking and higher accurate astro pictures. In addition, the telescope is shielded from unwanted and unsolicited outdoor lighting. These should allow for comfortable observation.
Planning is the first stage of building an observatory dome in one’s home. All the instruments to be used for observing, needs to be understood and getting the equipment (telescope, observatory itself, CCD camera and computer) to work together should be considered. There is a need to build considerable experience in the usage of these instruments.
Next to consider is the area where the covert will be located. Where there is space limitation, an observatory dome should be preferred to a roll-off roof type. Similarly, preferring a dome over a roll-off roof type observatory provides blockage of direct light from nearby windows and other artificial light emitting appliances that are at the outdoor. What about the sky glow that is caused by both nitrogen and oxygen blossoming in the upper atmosphere? It prevents the eye from becoming fully dark-adapted. So, by blocking out much of this sky glow along with artificial light pollution, a backyard observatory dome will allow the eyes of the astronomer to become more quickly adapted to the dark.
Improved dark-adaption enhanced deep sky views through the telescope. Also to think about is the type of the dome to obtain. Things to be considered are durability, reliability and ability of the dome to withstand the environment weather condition. Once the building type and materials for the observatory have been chosen, the next thing to consider is the design of it. For example, if sightseeing (observing) will have to be done from the observer’s chair, the telescope’s pier needs to be of a low profile observatory (about fifty five inches high including the pier height and the height of base of the foundation). It should also be stated here that since the height of the telescope pier will determine the height of the observatory’s wall and the height of the entrance to the beam. Low profile dome structure should equally be designed and adopted if beauty is a consideration.
And the environment weather conditions will determine whether or not the observatory will require insulation. Manufacturer’s insulation can be used to keep the dome warm or cool. A large dome will require more insulation than a smaller one. It is good to know that efficient heating device will greatly affect the condition of the dome. And finally, another thing to consider is the future expansion of the backyard observatory dome. This expansion needs not to be in space of the beam alone, but also in terms of technology.
