English is the dominant language throughout the whole world. It is the language of business and commerce; the internet is almost overwhelmingly written in English. The number of people who converse in this mother tongue every day is absolutely staggering. But there is one country which steadfastly refuses to cow to the prevailing winds and re brand itself in an English speaking manner. That nation is France. This nation is unique amongst all others in that it is one of the few places which does not adhere to the thinking that a common language for all is a good thing. They are so protective of the way they speak that they have instigated a professional committee of learned scholars who look over potential new additions to the dictionary and either approve or veto them. As a result, if someone wants to be able to keep up their end of a conversation with the average person in France, they will need to learn the language. For many this is daunting. But it should not be – for example, a large proportion of the English language is from France originally.

This is because Anglo Saxons spoke in a way which combined both English and its cousin from across the sea. English appropriated several words from its other language which are still in use today. Additionally, learning the construction of verbs and adjectives, as well as sentences as a whole, is not too difficult.

People in the west are far too lazy when it comes to conversing with foreigners in their own mother tongues. They seem to believe that just because English is cock of the hoop at the minute, that they do not need to bother to make an effort for others. This can often lead to missed opportunities in people’s lives which are opened up when they are a polyglot person, rather than a monoglot.

They should learn other ways of speaking because it can improve a person’s intelligence. Additionally, the ability to strike up a conversation with others is very useful. This is handy for both professional businessmen who go globetrotting, and for amateurs who simply want to be able to converse with people on holiday.

The ability to sit in a cafe in France and ask for a milky coffee and a croissant is understated. It is the pinnacle of achievement, and gives people inordinate pride. Moreover, the ordinarily standoffish locals will often soften when they realize a person is making a concerted effort to converse.

The west are alone in being able to only speak in one language. Getting French tutors to at least make it less of an embarrassment when confronted with a foreign language – at least one – would be helpful. They are skilled and not expensive.
