Your Next Vacation: Learn to Ski
We know where the first humans started to ski, though it\’s impossible to say when. Archaeologists found a cave painting of a skier in Norway dated to five thousand BCE, no doubt going for the gold. They\’ve also found a single ski, up to forty-five hundred BCE in Sweden.
Skiing has Old Norse connections, with the very word being derived from their word for \”split wood\”. Two minor Norse deities were said to have skied. There\’s no telling how it was invented. It isn\’t improbable that its inventor was the first person who ever tried walking through three feet of snow.
Skiing is divided into two broad categories. Nordic includes cross-country skiing and Telemark skiing. Telemark has its roots in 1869, at the beginning of skiing\’s adoption as a world recreation. What distinguishes it is that the skier\’s heel is completely free of any harness, so that the skier can kneel while turning. This is an easier, more natural style. While Telemark faded in popularity in the middle 20th Century, it has come into vogue since the Seventies due to skiing traditionalists.
Alpine skiing, the most popular type, is what most people envision when they think of skiing. Alpine is that rarefied winter world of lodges, lifts, and famous resorts. Its formal distinction is that the heel isn\’t free, but is attached to the ski. As competition, it has four principal kinds. Downhill has the fewest turns, slalom the most, with giant slalom and super giant slalom filling in the middle.
Those just starting out on the slopes usually have just a bit of trouble learning to become graceful on skis. It does help to have at least some minimal athleticism. You can hold your place on the slope by keeping the skis perpendicular to it, but that\’s almost cheating. True skiers accomplish this by holding the skis in the shape of a triangle, tips touching in front.
In order to start skiing, think of both skis together as a single tool. Aim the tips down the hill and lean forward. If you lean back, or even stand up straight, the tendency will be for your skis to slide out underneath you.
When you turn, shift your weight where you intend to turn. Edging your skis in that direction is a skill that will improve with experience, letting you carve smoother turns. Your energy, and even your mind, should be in the feet, in the ankles, lower legs and knees. When skiing on powder most of that thrust should be in the thighs. The basic rule is that to lighten up the pressure, stand up.
Skiing has a reputation for being dangerous that is undeserved. The number of people who get killed on the slopes is the same as those who killed by lightning, about 40 per year. Only about 10 percent of injuries come from collisions. There are many more twisted knees than concussions in skiing. If you\’re still concerned, there\’s a nice, easy \”bunny slope\” for you to learn on. So get out there and ski!
