5 Common Myths About Self Defense
Self defense is one thing needed by all of us. Even though you live in a very peaceful place, on a place with low crime rate, or even in a place where you have the best police force, it is still important to learn self defense. No one could be too sure when and where there is something bad that would happen. Although we always wish that we are safe, we could not afford to be complacent and it is always better to be prepared all the time. Learning self defense however, has also its downside. It should be learned properly for it to be applied correctly. There are some myths about self defense that people should be aware of and below are five of them:
1. Learning physical combat is the only way to defend your self – Self defense are not always about the physical aspect because if so, people who are less physically strong do not have a chance of defending themselves against a bigger attacker. Though it is true that if you have the skills in combat you have an edge, it does not mean that is the only way to defend yourself. You could always use a pepper spray or anything that can be legally purchased and used for the same purpose. Sometimes being wittier than being physically stronger could be an advantage when it comes to self defense.
2. Only women need self defense since they are the only target – Majority of those who are attacked may be women but they are not the only ones who are always targeted. Men could also be attacked anytime so they should always be prepared too. No one is really spared from any attackers so everyone also needs to learn about self defense. Also, as it goes the other way around, not all attackers are male.
3. All attackers have the same appearance – This is one of the biggest myths regarding self defense. Not all robbers, carjackers, or anyone with a bad intention have a similar “look”. It does not mean that if you see someone who does not have a tattoo, one who wears a suit, or one that seems to be a nice guy, they are not capable of doing any harm to others. Sometimes, it is a ploy that attackers dress up and look good to lure people into a trap.
4. Self defense is only useful at night or at places with less people around – Anyone could get attacked on broad daylight and in places when there are many people. You won’t know when you could use your self defense skills or strategies so you need to watch out. However, do not go to an extent wherein you will get paranoid all the time.
5. Self defense could be learned overnight and could be taught in one course – There are different self defense courses and each could be completely different from the other. Learning self defense is continuous and it takes time. Be open to learning new things all the time because there could be different scenarios that you could encounter. Be sure though to avoid fake instructors as they are just after your money.
