5 Objectives of Bloodborne Pathogen Training
For all those in the healthcare industry, their job is a perpetual risk. They are always at a risk of contracting illnesses, viruses and other health hazards. Bloodborne pathogen training is aimed at those who are in required to be in contact with body fluids like blood, seminal fluids, vaginal fluids and other fluid and mucous extractions of the body. If the right precautions are not taken by healthcare workers, they may be at a risk of contracting diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and AIDS. Not only is it a danger for the primary handler but for all the fellow workers and those in the vicinity of any unforeseen accident may also be effected.
The Department of Health makes it mandatory for all healthcare workers to undergo bloodborne pathogen training. Apart from doctors and nurses, lab workers, mortuary workers, paramedics and other people who are required to deal with human body fluids are required to undergo this training. While many institutes offer the course, there are also many online courses that are recommended. By the end of the training, the person is required to have working knowledge about the handling of body fluids in their workplace. The 5 main objectives would be as follows.
The medical professional upon the completion of his or her bloodborne pathogen training would be able to:
– Define the term “bloodborne pathogen” and identify potential hazards. This would help them identify the infected entity so that further action would be possible. Knowing and understanding the bloodborne pathogen would help one understanding the hazards it can cause if not handled properly.
– Understand and explain the term “Universal Precautions”. Bloodborne pathogens are required to be handled with utmost care and caution. Mishandling of the body fluids can pose extreme danger to the handler and the people surrounding the area.
– Recognize a bloodborne pathogen and the signs and labels indicating them. The labeling has to be done meticulously for the infected fluids should not be mixed and confused with the regular samples.
– Able to understand how the bloodborne pathogens are transmitted. Bloodborne pathogens are highly dangerous and can infect anyone when not handled properly. Dangerous diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV AIDS can be caused. Infected person’s body fluid can also affect the health of the other people as well.
– Differentiate between “work practice control\” and \”engineering control\”. In case of exposure, the trained person would be able to decide and take the appropriate steps to curb the contamination. While both the control systems aim at reducing the risk of infection in case of exposure, the work practice control deals with the removal of the hazard from the site. The engineering control controls the risk of contamination and exposure by overseeing the manner in which the task is performed.
Dealing with patients with dangerous infections or handling infected fluids is a very dangerous task. Thus training is very essential for it keeps the handler alert in his surroundings. This training is mandatory for meeting the above mentioned objectives.
