Many people nowadays speak their minds without thinking about the words that could hurt other people. Freedom of speech is celebrated in different parts of the world but this does not mean that you would just say whatever you want to say when you feel like it. Most of the times, verbal abuse results to numerous effects on people like the following:
a. Low self-esteem – when a person is being abused verbally, he usually feels very down. He thinks very little of himself. The hurtful words that were aimed at him stuck in his brain and plays in his head over and over. For example, when a parent is being verbally abusive to her child saying that the child is very incompetent, dumb, and useless then the tendency is that the child will doubt his personality. c. Depression – when the verbal abuse is continuously happening then it may lead to serious case of depression. Human’s mind could only take so much and hearing hurtful words repeatedly could be too much to bear.

1. Know a case of verbal abuse – it is very important that you know your limitations. You could joke around your friends or family by using foul words but you should know when it is enough and when you are already hurting other people’s feelings.
2. Always think before you speak – you should always think twice or even thrice about the words that you will utter. Once you have said things, there is no way to take it back. It is like the damage has been done already that a simple “sorry” would not be enough.
3. Estimate the person first before giving your constructive criticism – if you are not close with the other
person then you must not consider about giving constructive criticism.
4. Do not open your mouth when you are mad or angry – sometimes when a person is mad, he says things that are hurtful even if he really did not mean it. So don’t talk when you are full with high emotions.
5. Do not talk when you are drunk – it is the same thing when drunk – you say things that you didn’t mean so again, learn to shut your mouth up.
6. Analyze things first before reacting – a person may give you bad remark or something but it does not mean that you should counter-attack immediately. You should analyze the whole situation first.
