A Basic Guide on Choosing a Prep School
Prep school has different meanings in different countries. It may mean a learning institution whereby students attend in ordered to be prepared for university. It may be institutions where the students are prepared for secondary school. The ages for children who are to attend these schools also vary from country to country. Each one of them has its unique set of requirements and rules for new students.
Parents have various reasons for sending their children to prep school. As a parent one has to look into these reasons in detail and decide whether it is a wise decision. They are normally owned privately and may require extra money as compared to public ones. Others have special provisions for disabled children and this may be a reason. Here is a guide on choosing one.
Discuss your plan with the child in question. It may be what you want but they may have a different opinion. It is the child who will undergo a change and it may turn out to have a negative effect. Advance your reasons well and listen to what the young one has to say. Explain in detail as to what they are to expect. Do not force them and do not leave out information so as to convince them easily.
After that mental preparation establish what kind of place you want. Narrow down your list in terms of hobbies, talent and performance. Other reasons may be distance away from home and the dietary provisions in the institution. This will at least help you to come up with a list of places that you will and get your child into.
Collect information on the various places that you have on your list. You may contact parents who have children in that institution especially if you know them at a personal level. Search on the internet too. Call up the admissions departments to get all the information that you need from them. Use the information to narrow down your list. At least at this point you will have a clear list of where to start from.
At this point you shall have to narrow down the list further. Discuss the requirements with your child. You may also discuss them with trusted people who may be your educational consultants. You shall also visit the institutions and check them out. Request to carry out an observation of how they carry out their daily activities. Most of them will be welcoming and cannot refuse you to take a tour.
There are different tests offered in these institutions. They are done in order to determine if the child is fit to join the place. Find out what test they offer. When you have this information you can prepare the child to sit for them give then past papers of similar nature. At least with that they will not be surprised by the test on the day they shall be taking them.
After this preparation start making applications. The application forms should be available either online, from the school or from parents with the school. In case of any questions on the prep school consult the admission department on the same.
