Abandoned Self Storage Units Can Be Sold Or Auctioned
Many people find self storage units a great way to store things that they may not have room for in their homes. Some may even use these as a means to keep all of their belongings when moving or otherwise unable to keep their things with them. They have many uses and are quite popular.
When payment has not been made for a predetermined period of time to a company offering this type of service, these abandoned units can be sold or auctioned to the public. Auctions of this type have become increasingly popular, and are even featured on television. As the demand for auctions of this type has continued to increase, so has the number of storage companies offering it for units that have been abandoned or are unpaid.
Generally, potential buyers have no idea what is in the lockers beforehand. There may be a public listing of the names of the person or persons that rented it and whose belongings are inside. The units are sold as is, and the company expects that when the unit has sold that the buyer then becomes responsible for emptying the locker and disposing of the contents.
The lockers themselves come in a variety of sizes. Some may contain a few items, others may be completely packed full of things. It seems that the more stuff is in the unit, and therefore the less that can be seen from the outside, the more mystery there is and the higher the price it will sell for.
The lock is removed just before bids are accepted. Those who may be interested in bidding are allowed to look at the contents. Many times, the contents cannot be touched, and any closed containers are not allowed to be opened. Buyers must remain outside the locker and are given a time limit to observe the contents before the auction begins. The person who bids the highest is who will get possession of the contents of the locker.
While it may vary from each establishment, there is a time limit in which the locker contents must be emptied. Most storage companies will not allow the use of their refuse bins to those participating in the auctions, and therefore it is important to remember that if there is a large amount of things that are considered garbage, they must be hauled off site and disposed of. This may be at an additional cost.
Personal effects, such as papers, should be left behind. This is a general practice of these types of auctions, requiring that identifying paperwork which can consist of mail, identification, paperwork or other things of this type remain property of the storage company. If they are found following the auction, for example, if all items are are taken to another location to be sorted, they should be returned as soon as possible.
Self storage auctions can be a fun experience. Many people make a living doing this, and sell their winnings in second hand stores or online. While rare, there can sometimes be items of great value, which can make this a lucrative hobby. Either way, there is a lot of work involved, and it can be very time consuming and perhaps a loss of money if there is nothing of value inside.
