Aesthetic Skin Care Guides: The Dangers of Tanning Beds

For those who gets there tan by regularly visiting the nearest tanning bed, should better reconsider this because it has been known to cause serious side effects.

I know a lot of us long to have that California sun-kissed glow, that is why we spend a big chunk of our budget for regular tanning salon trips. Aside from that, we go the beach and would even spend hours on end basking in the sun just to get that perfect hue. But most women don’t have the luxury of time or patience to sit and turn to get the perfect coverage while sunbathing, which is why most would opt for tanning beds.

A tanning bed, also known as a sunbed or sun tanning bed, is a device that can give you that cosmetic tan through the ultraviolet lights that are located inside.

If you look at it closely, the term “ultraviolet light” should already be a giveaway that it can be pretty dangerous. Well for starters, why do you think we need to put on sunscreen while sunbathing? That is to protect us from the harmful UV rays of the sun which can cause sunburn and other skin problems.

Now getting that exposure at a very close range can be dangerous. According to Dr. Susan Evans, tans and sunburns are detrimental to the skin because it causes DNA damage. With that you are more at risk for developing skin cancer.

You may probably hear tanning salons saying that the amount of radiation that their tanning beds have are within safe limits. Of course you have to count in the fact that they are saying this for advertising. But what most patrons don’t know is that these tanning beds usually go beyond its safety margin.

Some salons might even say that their tanning beds are particularly designed to produce UVA rays, making them safer for use. But you should know that UVA has an effect which is as bad as UVB. So you are still placing your skin at risk for premature aging, wrinkles, and cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma could result from the constant exposure to UV rays or UV radiation, either from the sun or tanning beds. But the risk for developing skin cancer is said to be 74% more likely for those who usually opt for tanning beds than outdoors.

But what is more alarming about this situation is that the demographic for those who are frequently going to tanning salons are becoming younger. Teenagers are becoming a large consumer in the market, since they are at a stage in their life where appearance can mean a great deal.

However, teenagers frequenting tanning beds are making themselves more vulnerable to the chances of developing melanomas. The teenage or puberty years is that time where the cells are rapidly growing and reproducing, and constant exposure to UV rays can affect that process.

Some tanning salons would even sugarcoat their services by saying that tanning is healthy because this promotes the synthesis of Vitamin D in our bodies. But you should know that there are so many other healthier options aside from tanning beds.

Therefore, it is important to carefully consider on how you should get that healthy tan. Tanning beds can be the easy way to attain that, but you should also weigh the serious risks that it poses.

That is why I would advise that the natural way is the better way to go. But also be reminded that you too much sun exposure can cause to wrinkles, skin laxity, and uneven skin tone. So have everything in moderation if you really want to be a more beautiful version of yourself.
