Akiles DuoMac C41 Comb / Coil Binding Machine Review

If you are shopping around for a book binding machine, you may be torn on settling with any one format. Buying two machines is often out of the question. So what can you do if you like multiple binding formats? You may want to consider looking at a combination binding machine, sometimes called a multi-format binding machine, like the Akiles DuoMac C41 comb and coil binding machine.

Akiles manufactures a wide range of coil, comb and wire binding machines. Their lineup includes several multi-format book binding machines. Their most popular combination machine is the WireMac Duo, which was capable of binding wire in 2:1 pitch and 3:1 pitch wire. The pitch is the holes per inch. The DuoMac line is one of the first binding machine formats to incorporate multiple formats other than comb and wire.

The DuoMac can be used to bind books in both comb and coil. The comb hole pattern is a 19-ring pattern and the coil pattern is a 4:1 pitch (four holes per inch). The addition of a wire closer allows you to also bind using 19-ring Spiral-O wire (9/16\” wire pitch). These hole patterns are nothing alike, so how does Akiles combine the two into one?

Akiles combines two separate punching stations into one machine. It looks a bit like something you would find in Frankenstein\’s lab, but it comes together nicely in a machine that is really easy to use. The front punching station punches paper in a 4:1 pitch coil pattern (four holes per inch). This punch is oriented in a horizontal position. A second 19-ring punch is located farther back on the machine. Each punch has its own independent punching handle. Both the coil punch and the comb punch feature disengageable punching pins. Both punches are capable of punching through about 20 sheets of 20# bond paper.

A comb opener and closer is located on the far back of the machine and a wire closer is located on the front of this machine. It is really an impressive device to see in person. Because it binds so many formats, you are never limited and binding options are plentiful. This can be used to bind books and presentations in comb, coil and wire using clear covers, binding covers, poly covers and much more. Mix and match covers and paper until you get the exact presentation or report you want.

This machine features durable hardened metal punching pins, margin depth control, a diameter selector tool and much more. I have never seen a machine with so much metal in it. It weighs in at 64 pounds, so be sure you have ample space and a sturdy work surface.

While this binding machine does include coil crimping pliers, it would be nice if it came with an electric coil inserter. All things considered, however, that is a minor issue. Considering the size and complexity of the machine, it is actually pretty easy to use.

This binding machine is perfect for use in binderies, cop centers, print shops, advertising agencies, schools, offices and more. You will find the Akiles DuoMac C41 at ABCOffice.com.
