Akiles RubiCoil 4:1 Pitch Coil Binding Machine Review
One of the most popular binding formats used today is coil binding, often referred to as spiral binding. This format has many benefits, which will be covered in this article. One example of a coil binding machine is the Akiles Rubicoil. This coil binding machine has been around for over half a decade and has accumulated a following. This article will cover the pros and the cons of the Akiles Rubicoil.
As mentioned earlier, coil binding is a very popular format. To begin with, the machines are now affordable for just about anyone. The binding coil supplies themselves cost just pennies a piece. There are literally dozens of different colors to choose from. Diameters are also abundant, available in several sizes and hole patterns.
Coil binding is especially popular because the PVC coils are almost indestructible. They also allow the pages of a book to lay flat or even be wrapped all the way around. I have seen many people use coil binding for instructional books, cookbooks and even for automotive manuals. Just about any booklet, presentation or report can be coil bound.
The Akiles Rubicoil uses a 4:1 pitch hole pattern, which means it punches 4 holes per inch of paper. This is the most common hole pattern used because it is the most versatile, Unlike the 5:1 pitch, which has a 13/16\” (20mm) limitation, the 4:1 pitch can bind a book up to 1 1/4\” (32mm). Ultimately the hole pattern used is a matter of personal preference.
The Rubicoil is an entry level machine. That means that it is best used for binding a few to a few dozen books a day. It is not recommended for binding hundreds of books a day. This shouldn\’t scare you away though. It still produces professional results and gets the job done quickly.
The Akiles Rubicoil is a completely manual binding machine. The holes are manually punched, up to 10 sheets, by pulling on a handle. The sheet capacity of 10 sheets is based on 20lb paper, which is the thickness of standard copy paper. This handle is U shaped, making the machine easy to operate whether you are right or left handed. If needed, both hands can be used to punch the paper. I have discovered, however, that if you need to use both hands you are usually punching too many sheets of paper.
The coil insertion process is completely manual. There is no electric coil inserter. This may be a bit of a turnoff for some people, however, it is just fine (in my opinion) for light volume binding, Simply spin the coil until it comes out the other side. Coil binding supplies come in 12\” lengths, allowing about 1/2\” overlap on each side of the book. Once the coil has been spun through the holes, the excess coil is cut off and crimped using coil crimping pliers.
The entire coil binding operation will probably take a few minutes, depending on the skill and experience of the operator. If you need to be able to bind books faster, I recommend getting a machine with an electric coil inserter. If the idea of manually punching paper tires you, consider getting a machine with an electric punching die.
While this machine is pretty basic, it is made by Akiles, which is one of the best manufacturers out there. The build quality is excellent and this machine should easily hold up for years with proper use. You will find the Akiles RubiCoil at ABCOffice.com.
