Brochures From Then to Now

Brochures come in many shapes and sizes. They can consist of only a few pages or of many, come in one language or various, be full color or only black and white. However you look at it, a brochure may be a handy marketing tool for lots of different industries.

For a small business owner, a brochure might be a sales technique to use daily, or at peak-times like mid-month and month-end. Usually these would push special lines to attract the customers. They advertise a couple of products sold at a very low price to get feet in the store. Then they hope for the clients to buy not only the specials, but other goods as well.

Then there is the brochures used for direct selling. These could include but are not at all limited to cosmetics. This type of selling method has evolved much from how it used to be when it first started out.

Originally a company that kept many products started a catalogue with only printed names of products available and sent it out to customers living far from town. They used it as a type of ordering to be delivered system and got lots of business, as they could provide goods not generally available on the outskirts, as it was called. This catalogue consisted of many pages and listed thousands of products.

From there this type of catalogue has evolved to rather focus on pictures of the product, or the desired effect such a product could have when used. This is mainly so because of the television, where people has become so used to be visually stimulated that words alone are not as attractive anymore. These catalogues could include a product name and brief description, as well as a price, or at least a price code.

Another type of direct selling material are of course those provided by clubs. These could be book-, wine-, gardening-clubs where there are a new brochure each month. Normally these clubs would asks one to become a member and to buy at least one product a month or a quarter, and give at least the same amount of notice if one wishes to leave the club.

Of course there are other types of brochures out there. Like the ones found in an information centre or maybe a museum. These are informational brochures and their key focus is to give relevant information of things like tourist destinations and places of interest.

Guest houses and restaurants as well as other tourist destinations usually print material and supply the information centres with it to promote their businesses. Some tourist centres actually requires that the company wanting to display their goods must be a member of the local tourism board before they are allowed to do so.

Brochures can even come in handy for fund-raisers or be used in non-profit business types. And with the current technological era brochures have also come to see the digital light. Many companies have their printed versions copied on-line. This is widely referred to as an e-brochure. Then there are also those who distribute promotional DVDs containing their latest products and or inventions. All various methods of getting the message out there.
