Choosing the Bass Guitar Versus the Electric Guitar
Once you have decided to take up music you need to make to figure out what instrument suits you best. Perhaps guitar is the most popular, but bass is a wonderful instrument that every band needs. Both instruments have a lot to recommend to themselves.
The electric bass has the crucial responsibility of outlining the chords and holding down the rhythm, the pulse, and the beat of the song. It may not be as glamorous as playing guitar, the instrument hogging the spotlight, but it provides the difference between good and great groups. It\’s understated but immensely important. There\’s still room for self-expression, as bass players from all genres inject their own flavour into their chosen style-swinging hard in jazz, slapping the bass in funk, and straight ripping in punk. Bass requires a perfect sense of timing. That\’s why the bass player is normally next to the drummer on stage-they need to hear each other and be in perfect sync.
Playing guitar gives you a near endless amount of variety. The first main choice is between rhythm and lead. You may decide to play both and switch from song to song. Most guitar players come across both at one point. So whether you want to own the limelight or blend in the background, the guitar can accommodate you.
Often times you\’ll encounter a musician who inspires you to play. There\’s a good chance you\’ll want to play whatever instrument they play, but not always. A lot of Pink Floyd fans may love Roger Waters but they\’ll take up guitar, like Dave Gilmour. Then again, maybe you\’ll listen to Rick James or Victor Wooten and decide the bass is for you.
One thing to consider is the overlap: they\’re both string instruments arranged the same way, and if you learn one you\’re not very far away from the other. Also, there\’s no shortage of guitar players out there. The same is not true of bass players. You\’ll be more in demand as a musician if you select the bass. You don\’t need to have professional aspirations for this to enter into your decision to take up the bass, as even the jams you casually hold with friends will sound much better with the bass accompanying. It\’s very common for there to be two or three guitars, but people will be grateful for a competent player on an instrument with a diverse range. It offers a more wide ranging sound than most jams have.
If you\’re taken by so musicians like Hendrix and Clapton, then the odds are the bass is not going to cut it. Some people need free reign, and for this there\’s nothing like a guitar solo. The guitar gives the best platform for improvisation. The bass may be too confining for this species of musician. No matter what kind of music you like it may have more to do with your personal temperament. Either way, they are two fine instruments!
