Customize A Calendar For Branding Purposes

Before we talk about what it means to “customize a calendar for branding purposes”, it’s best to talk about what we mean by branding. To some, branding means logos and t-shirts and mouse pads and all kinds of paraphernalia which people are given by various companies. Some people equate brands with symbols, and that in fact is the origin of the concept.

Cowboys used to brand cattle with a symbol, and this symbol told others that the cow belonged to an identifiable rancher. (The word “brand” is related to the word “burned”.) The cows weren’t too happy about it but it kept them from being “rustled”. (The word “rustled” just means ‘wrestled’ so now you know how they stole the cattle.)

But I digress. So branding your image in the mind of the public means that your company

– is identifiable by its symbology (logo, name, slogan, etc.);

– is seen as unique and well-differentiated from its competitors.

But even that explanation is incomplete. If all it took to create a successful business were logos and slogans, then the advertising and novelty industries could make a corporate titan out of any small business.

Branding, however, is more than that. A great brand is one which, when people hear the name of the company that “owns” the brand, calls to mind a strong emotional reaction about that company. If I mention Company X and you think, “They always have the most reliable products.” then Company X has a great brand (at least in your eyes).

If you mention Company Z and I say “Super customer service.” then I am basically telling you that as far as I’m concerned Company Z has a great company brand.

There’s also such a thing as a “negative brand”. If you mention your ‘terrible experience’ at Company R, and I tell you that I will ‘never buy from them’ again, then it’s safe to assume that you and I see Company R’s brand as extremely negative.

So now we can start to think about how to “brand” our calendar.

By all means, put your logo and company slogan on your calendar. You may also want to place information about important products that you offer. But all of this doesn’t really convey what your company is all about.

You should consider going a step further. You can use the illustration pages of the twelve months to show people (real customers or models) using and enjoying your products. You can show your customer service people handling problems. You can show installation technicians at work making sure that your product is ready to use. You can show real employees involved in charity work that your company is involved in.

In other words, building a brand means making sure that your customer sees you and your products and employees working together to meet the needs of its customers and community. If you can make that work for your calendar, then you are fully branded.
