Different Considerations Before Adopting Pet Bunny
Adopting a pet especially rabbit needs a lot of consideration. You cannot just adopt one when you feel like it or when you kids request you to do so. You should remember many considerations before finally adopting a pet bunny. Here are some of these considerations:
1. Breed of rabbit to adopt – It would be best to consider the breed of rabbit that you want to adopt. There are numerous breeds of rabbit with different sizes, shapes and color. Some examples are the following:
*Netherland Dwarf – The smallest breed of rabbit that usually weigh around 2.5 pounds. This breed is perfect for older kids and adults. You will usually see a Netherland dwarf happy and energetic.
*Palomino – They are hard to find but definitely wonderful pets to have. They are large rabbits that grow up to 11 pounds. They come in two different colors – gold and lynx. They are usually calm and quiet.
*Flemish Giants – This is the largest breed of rabbit that grows up to 20 pounds. They are perfect as indoor pets. They are calm and very easy to tame.
2. Where to adopt- Another consideration to make is the place where you will adopt your pet rabbit. You could adopt from a breeder, pet shop but most advisable is to adopt from a rescue center. Rescued rabbits definitely need a second home so it would be nice if you could choose from there.
3. Availability of space for shelter – It is also important to consider the space in your house. You must be aware that you will provide a shelter for your pet bunny so it is just right to consider the availability of space in your house. If you are living in a condominium or apartment then you might want to consult the owners first if you are allowed to have a pet.
4. Time that you can devote – Rabbits may not like to be cuddled but they still require time from their owners. You should make sure that you can devote at least 1 hour a day for your rabbit or else they will be depressed.
5. Expenses – Another consideration to make before adopting pet bunny is about the expenses. You need to be prepared to pay for expenses with regards to the grooming, vet, foods and other vitamins.
It is recommendable that you consider different factors around you first before you finally decide to adopt a pet rabbit. No one is stopping you from adopting most especially if you think it is feasible for you to have a pet in your house.
It is not advisable to allow kids to have pet rabbit just because they see rabbits from cartoons that they are watching. Rabbits in real life are more complicated to take care of than the tame rabbit that people see on TV. Kids are usually eager to carry around their pets and play around but rabbits do not feel comfortable being carried and cuddled.
If you decided to adopt pet bunny then you should make sure to explain to your kids that the pet does not want to be disturbed inside the cage and that they prefer to have their feet on the ground than being held up.
