When attempting to execute a project requiring hand tools some people try to take short cuts. They rationalize that they have always made do with jury rigging and that they do not need to spend the extra money for the specific tool the job requires. What they may not realize is that the correct tool will save them time and produce better results.

Implements were created to fulfill a need and in skilled hands they are powerful helpers. Power tools require a knowledge of the electricity that propels the instruments. The operator of the instrument must know how to use this to their advantage. Electricity provides the apparatus with the ability to move on its own without the operator. The operator guides the tool to perform its function. While the tool does the sanding, or the cutting, the operator must place it in the correct position so that it will cut where it is required.

There is a significant difference between cutting down a tree with a chain saw or cutting it down manually. Many more trees are felled quickly with the power saw than could ever be possible by hand. The operator must learn how to safely use these instruments because they have the potential to seriously hurt the unskilled person. Many accidents have occurred where limbs have inadvertently been cut off leaving the operator maimed for life. Without a doubt electrical power has shortened the work time but they must be used with safety in mind.

Gardening too is made easier by power tools. Leaf blowers, hedge trimmers and riding mowers are used by most people to keep their yard neat and trim. Early garden tools were nothing more than crude sticks. Ancient man figured out that if the stick was longer or shorter there would be more control for doing a particular task. From sticks evolved all sorts of gardening tools like the hoe, the rake and the shovel .

Most people do not know that there are many shovels designed for specific jobs. Some dig deeper holes and some are designed to dig shallow holes. Uninformed, the unsuspecting person will try to dig a deep hole with an implement designed for shallow holes. The time spent struggling with the wrong garden implements will make the gardening experience frustrating and with that any future desire to garden will have dissolved.

Hand tools work best when skilled hands are behind them. Together they create projects of beauty and function. Skill and knowledge are needed to make full use of these implements but the reward is the satisfaction in creating something with one\’s own hands.
