How to Clean a Dog’s Ears

Dogs can be very good companions especially when proper care and attention was given from puppyhood up to his or her current age. Most of us love this type of animal due to its love, loyalty, trust, and care for us and our family members in that we treat it as a member of the family in return. Most of us show our gratitude and love in terms of regular feeding, exercise, quality time, and grooming.

Dogs need a lot of grooming especially those that have longer coats as they tend to get out of form especially when they can access the outdoors. A dog’s ear needs special attention as dirt, debris, and insects may get stuck on the inside. Regular cleaning of the ears should be done in a proper way in order to prevent ear infection as well as the infestation of mites. Here is a simple step on how you can take good care of your pet’s ears.

– Materials and Supplies – you will need cotton balls and baby oil for the job. However, on some cases where the ear has an infection, you will need an antiseptic as well as an anti-irritation cream in order to successfully heal the ears of your beloved dog.

– Cotton Balls – prepare as much cotton balls on a container that you will be using as possible as you will most likely have your hands full later. In addition, your hands will be dirty later on which will not be a good time for you to take some cotton from the plastic bag.

– Pour Baby Oil – pour an adequate amount of baby oil on a piece of cotton ball. While holding one of the ears with the other hand, carefully massage the inner part of the ear using the cotton. The oil will then run through the various parts of the inside of the ear making the dirt buildups or anything that is inside the ears to soften up.

– Remove Dirt – use the same cotton ball in removing the dirt from the inside of the dog’s ear. Make sure that you are not using too much force as your canine companion will be uncomfortable with it. Get a clean piece of cotton and repeat the cleaning process. Do the same task until you are done with the dirt removal task. In case the cotton creates friction with each wipe, you can always use oil on the cotton to prevent any discomfort on your pet.

– Same Process – repeat the same cleaning process on the other ear and make sure that you start with the oil massage which helps a lot in softening up the dirt.

– Dry – using a clean, soft cloth, pat dry the inside of both ears to prevent any infection which are usually caused by partially wet ears. In case there is infection, you can always use the antiseptic instead of using baby oil. Apply an anti-irritation cream afterwards to ensure that the infection is under control and is being treated accordingly.
