The emo trend started with a melodic and expressive rock music style which originated in the mid-80s hardcore punk scene. A whole culture and style developed around it. Last but not least there is the hair style and make up. These are features that emos consider extremely important. They use dramatic shades, lots of black liquid eyeliner and both boys and girls paint their nails. The purpose of this is making their features more expressive.
As for the hair, girls choose shorter hair than normal and both boys and girls go for shaggy styles with big bangs that cover their eyes. They sometimes dye their hair black with brighter and colourful highlights.
